October 12, 2016 | Football
HONOLULU – The Polynesian Football Hall of Fame released its Class of 2017, inducting five former players and contributors, including former University of Colorado standout Chris Naeole.
Also honored were Junior Ah You, Riki Ellison, Ma'a Tanuvasa and John Manumaleuna.
Naeole, a Kaaawa, Hawai'i who played high school football at Kahuku High School, starred on the offensive line for the Buffaloes from 1992-96. He was a consensus first-team All-American as a senior becoming the first native Hawaiian player in 51 years to achieve this honor. Naeole also had 58 pancake blocks as a senior, a school record, and did not allow a quarterback sack in his final 28 games.
Naeole was drafted by the New Orleans Saints at No. 10 overall, the highest a CU offensive lineman has ever been drafted. He played 12 seasons in the NFL with the Saints and Jacksonville Jaguars, starting in all but four of his 154 career games and missing only one.
The Class of 2017 will be honored during the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Weekend to be held on January 21-22, 2017 in Oahu, Hawai'i. The inductees will also be recognized at the inaugural Polynesian Bowl, a premier senior high school all-star game featuring the world's elite players of Polynesian heritage and other ancestries.
The Inductees were chosen by a selection committee composed of past head football coaches Dick Tomey (Chairman), LaVell Edwards, Ron McBride and Dick Vermeil, ESPN SportsCenter anchor Neil Everett, NFL player personnel expert Gil Brandt, past NFLPA president Kevin Mawae (Polynesian Football HOF Inaugural Inductee) and Hawai'i sportscaster Robert Kekaula.
