CU Wins 10th In A Row, Remains Perfect In Pac-12

October 14, 2016 | Soccer

BOULDER - No. 23 Colorado earned its 10th consecutive win behind a brace from Danica Evans and a big performance in goal by Jalen Tompkins as the Buffaloes beat Washington 2-1 at Prentup Field. CU improved to 12-3-0 overall and 6-0-0 in the Pac-12, while the Huskies fell to 6-8-1 and 1-5-0 in the conference.

WHAT HAPPENED: Evans scored twice in the first half. Her goal at 31:34 put the Buffs up 1-0 as she got ahead of UW's defense after a pair of quick passes from Camilla Shymka and Taylor Kornieck following a goal kick.

Washington tied it up just over three minutes later as Kimberly Keever had an open strike from the left side of the box.

Evans answered right back at 39:08. Stephanie Zuniga chipped in a pass to Evans, who controlled the ball out of the air with her back to the goal, spun and flicked it over the goalkeeper for the score. Kornieck set up the pass to Zuniga and earned her second assist of the match.

The second half was all Washington, but Tompkins was up to the task, making five of her six saves after halftime. The biggest moment of the match came in the 88th minute. She made a leaping, diving save off a free kick from 30 yards that was headed into the upper-left corner of the net. Tompkins deflected the ball up off the crossbar, but the rebound fell at the foot of another Huskies player. Tompkins then made a diving save on the point-blank shot off the rebound to keep the Buffs in front.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: Evans's two goals was her first two-goal match since transferring to CU last season. For Kornieck, it was her first career two-assist match.

UP NEXT: Colorado will get a will-needed rest as the team's next match is next Thursday at Stanford. That 8 p.m. MT kickoff will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.

NOTES: Kornieck had her school-record five-match goal streak snapped, but she stretched her points streak to six matches with two assists … CU has been outshot five times this season by its opponents, but has a 4-1 record in those matches … the current six-match winning streak in Pac-12 matches is the longest conference winning streak in school history and the current 10-match overall winning streak is one shy of the school record of 11 wins in a row set in 2003.

POSTMATCH QUOTES
Danny Sanchez, head coach
On the performance of the team
"What I gutsy performance. I think that sometimes gets lost in the shuffle. Soccer is different from other sports. What I was really proud of, all the credit to Washington. In the second half they brought the game to us. We had players that stepped up and made plays today. We need everybody. I was really proud of the effort in the second half. Do I think we played our best soccer? No. Did we win the game? Yes. Pleased with that, credit to Washington who brought pressure in the second half but we made plays when we had to."

On Jalen Tompkins progression
"I thought she made a couple big saves, and really the second saves right after the initial saves. But having said that I think she could have played better. But two or three huge saves in the second half when we are under pressure I think if we give up a goal obviously we are in trouble. We weren't playing our best soccer at the other end. I thought first half we played very well. At the end of the day a gutsy performance. There were some great individual performances by Danica (Evans), JJ (Jalen Tompkins), our back four, Erin (Greening), Vidger (Alex Vidger), Mikaela Kraus, Kelsey (Aaknes) and Courtney (Fedor) coming in were fantastic."

On the ability to score after being scored on
"We didn't hang our heads, we kept pushing and Danica (Evans) had a poacher's goal. To get on the end of it and flick the ball with the outside of her foot was just classy. I think it says that this is a resilient group. I think we saw the resilience in the second half. But we know with the games we have coming up we will have to do better."

On whether or not it's good having one game this week in order to prepare for coming matches
"Yeah, everybody has one game though. We will go into these next two games on the road with some momentum and some belief. Sometimes I think that goes a long way. But also remember we are the underdogs. Let's not look at the standings. We know where we are at. We know we have to gut out these wins so next weekend isn't going to be any different."

On the conditioning and preparation
"Especially at home we have to take advantage of the altitude. It was a little warm today. I felt especially with a single-game weekend we could play more players more minutes. Having said that, these next couple weekends where we have two games we are going to need more people to step up and we will need even more next weekend."

On finding a way to win games and the expectation of the team's winning ways.
"I knew we had a great group of young ladies. We felt if they really worked hard for each other, good things could happen. Now this game could have gone either way obviously but when you have a group of young ladies that are willing to be committed for each other, and work hard for each other, good things can happen and fortunately today was one of those days where I felt once again that it wasn't our best performance however, we gutted it out, we defended, and JJ (Jalen Tomkins) made the saves when she had to."

Danica Evans, senior, forward
On the second goal she scored
"I think it was a defensive mistake. I mean the goalie was calling for the ball and the defender let it go. I was there at the right time and I trusted it."

On it being the first 2 goal game of her career
"It's exciting and I honestly could not have done it without my team."

On the variety of game that they've won
"It's teamwork and it's urgency throughout the entire game. If we weren't working defensively or offensively together then they probably would have scored. It would have been a whole different game. So, we had JJ in the back coming up with big saves and everybody on the team contributed."

On JJ's performance in game
"JJ's a phenomenal goalie and she definitely saved us multiple times. When she's in the back I honestly have no worry."

On preparing for the next game
"It gives us (six) days until our next one. We're going to work hard at training and when we get to California we're going to work as hard as we can and hopefully get some more wins."

On the leaders of the team
"It's exciting and I have plenty of my teammates behind me. There's multiple leaders, all different ages. So don't just look at the seniors you have to look at everybody. Like JJ in the back. It's definitely a team effort and there's no way we'd be where we are without everyone."

Jalen Tompkins, redshirt freshman, goalkeeper
On the leadership of the team
"We have great dynamic and we have leaders on this team who know what to do. Morgan's (Stanton) a huge leader and she knows how to fill those gaps very well. Our motto is "stronger together." And that's really what it is. When one person comes off the bench we're just supporting everybody and having confidence within them. Everybody on the team is a great player. So, when you step into that role you just have to believe it. And so I think our team does that. We think we're good, we believe we're great, and we're going to beat these teams."

On leading the Pac 12 in save percentage
"I think we've come a long way. I think all of those stats attest more to the defense than to me because I think they're doing the big work. They're blocking shots, they're making sure no one gets corner kicks and for me, I just have to do my job and make the saves I'm trained to make."

On the pressure she faced in the 2nd half
"Just do my job. Do what we do every day in training. I know my teammates are going to put their life on the line. I was telling them 'do whatever you have to.' So, I knew I had to do the same. I couldn't just say it and be a hypocrite. I could not believe how slow the clock was moving. But I'm just really proud of everybody. I think with the injuries everybody's come together as a cohesive unit again and just the dynamics are amazing. Win or lose this dynamic is amazing."

On the two saves at the end
"I have to make up for some mistakes. I have to be a little bit cleaner out there. My teammates are doing their job. So, that's what I have to do every day. "
