Buffs Stun No. 9 UCLA For Second Consecutive Win Over Top-10 Team

October 27, 2016 | Soccer

BOULDER - No. 22 Colorado knocked off its second consecutive top-10 opponent, defeating No. 9 UCLA 1-0 on Thursday afternoon at Prentup Field. The Buffs were coming off a 3-2 double-overtime victory at No. 10 California on Sunday.

CU improved to 14-4 overall and 8-1 in the Pac-12, remaining in first place in the conference. Pending the outcome of Southern California and Stanford's matches tonight, the Buffs could jump be alone atop the table with losses by those two schools. UCLA dropped to 12-4-1, including 6-2-1 in the Pac-12.

WHAT HAPPENED: The Buffs and Bruins played an even first half, though CU outshot UCLA 7-3. Taylor Kornieck had the best chance of the half in the 21st minute, forcing a turnover at the top of the box and getting ahead of the UCLA defense. But her shot from 15 yards missed high, over a charging goalkeeper.

Bruder scored the only goal of the match at 49:30 to put the Buffs in front less than five minutes into the second half. Danica Evans passed the ball out from the box to Bruder on the left wing. After dribbling around two defenders, she bent the shot into the far post from the top of the 18.

The Buffs were outshot 10-4 after the goal, but kept the majority of the shots from long distance with strong defensive play.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: Jalen Tompkins made four saves for her seventh clean sheet this season, moving into a tie for the fifth-most in a season in school history. Two of her saves came in the final 10 minutes. Bruder and Evans both led the team with four shot attempts each.

UP NEXT: CU will host No. 4 Southern California at noon on Sunday at Prentup Field.

NOTES: The eight Pac-12 wins tie the school record for most conference wins in a season and are already the most since joining the Pac-12 (CU went 8-1-1 in the Big 12 in 2003) ... Bruder has scored in three matches this season and has the game-winning goal in each ... CU improved to 2-7 all-time against UCLA with its first win over the Bruins since joining the Pac-12 ... it was the highest-ranked opponent CU has defeated since beating No. 6 Texas A&M in 2010 and it is the first time CU has defeated back-to-back top-10 opponents.

POSTMATCH QUOTES
Danny Sanchez, head coach
On impressions of the game
"I thought the first half we played well. Their keeper made two really good saves. I thought we had some good pressure and I thought in the second half we started well. Obviously a great goal from Emily (Bruder). A great hold up play from Danica (Evans) to find Emily (Bruder). UCLA was going to throw numbers at us. They are a very good team and they are very dynamic. I thought not only our goalkeeper but our back four with Joss (Orejel) coming back in, Morgan (Stanton) doing all her work, Megan Massey dealing with their best player for the majority of the second half, Sarah (Kinzner) doing work. Then you look at the players up top, Emily Bruder and Danica (Evans) working back and defending. It was a true team effort and team win, I couldn't be more proud."

On Megan Massey covering Jesse Fleming
"She's (Fleming) so dynamic. She picks the ball up in dangerous spots. We felt that we had to keep her in front of us and if she was going to beat us make her beat us from distance. I thought we did a good job of keeping her in front of us."

On Emily's scoring chance
"You can see how dangerous Emily (Bruder) is when she's playing her best soccer over the last few weeks. I'm really pleased for her because she puts the work in every day. And you can see today she puts the work in on both sides of the ball. It was a really nice finish. It was a great hold up play from Danica (Evans) and a really nice finish from Emily (Bruder)."

On Joss playing in the midfield
"At the end of the day she (Joss Orejel) is a good player. We want to get her on the field but also we don't want to disrupt what we have going in the back. So she played a little bit in the back, but she's a good player. She can play anywhere on the field. She can play forward. She stepped in the midfield and did a good job winning some balls for us and making some passes."

On the time between now and the USC game
"It's all about recovery. We have a very professional group so there will be a lot of working going in with Kari Kebach (athletic trainer) and Karim Derqaoui, our strength coach, just keeping them sharp. We will be off tomorrow. It will be an active off. They will go in and get treatment and get a good dinner tonight and then we will come back on Saturday morning and get ready for USC. At the end of the day you can't go through life having moments like this and not enjoy them. I want them to be with their family, friends, and teammates and enjoy this."

On being atop the Pac-12 standings
"At the end of the day we have put ourselves in a good position where we have a big game against USC on Sunday. USC plays Utah tonight so we will see what happens with that. Whatever happens we will put our best effort forward on Sunday."

On Getting the Win...
"It's really important to us since last season we really didn't do that well and this season we're just killing it on the field. It just proves that we can play with the bigger teams in the Pac-12, like UCLA and Cal."

On UCLA Pushing for the Tying Goal Late...
"We just had to stay compact and communicate well. We had to step up and that's what we did on defense to keep UCLA out of the goal."

On the Team Being Improved from Last Season...
"It just shows how much potential that we do have and how we've come a long way. And that we still have a lot left for later seasons."

Emily Bruder, Sr., F
On a First Half Attempt...
"I think it was good to get that shot in even though I skyrocketed it to the right. Sometimes you just need to have a warm-up shot, and then after that you can be more confident to be able to take the next ones."

On Scoring the Only Goal of the Game...
"The shot felt good when I scored. And it was a good play by Danica Evans to get me the ball. I think that we've been finding each other pretty well in the last few games. Sometimes when it comes down to it we just need to get that first goal and that's what we did."

On the Confidence the Team is Playing With...
"We know that every single team we're going to play is a great team. UCLA is a great team and was Cal was a great team. And we're going in with a lot of confidence saying that they're a great team but so are we. We just take it one game at a time, and that's what we've been doing. I feel like that's our thing with this team, that we focus on one thing at a time. I think that's been working for us."

On the Short Turnaround with the Next Game on Sunday...
"We kind of keep in mind the fact that the pressure isn't on us, it's on the other teams. Coming from last season, which was a hard one, we're kind of the underdogs going into these games. This season is just a huge turnaround and I think that's what keeps all the momentum going with us going right now."
