Kornieck Named National Player Of The Week

October 05, 2016 | Soccer

CULVER CITY, Calif. - Colorado soccer player Taylor Kornieck was named Top Drawer Soccer Women's National Player of the Week for her efforts in two road matches last week. It is just the third time in school history at CU player has earned national player of the week honors, joining Nikki Marshall (Sept. 7, 2006 by Soccer Times) and Anne Stuller (Aug. 28, 2012 by Soccer America).

Kornieck led the Buffaloes to a pair of 1-0 road victories, scoring the lone goal in both wins. She had a goal in the 56th minute in a 1-0 victory over Arizona on Thursday and connected on a score in the 45th minute of another 1-0 win at Arizona State on Sunday. For the season, she leads the team with eight goals, including five game-winners, ranking third nationally in the latter category.

Jalen Tompkins was also listed on the honorable mention of Top Drawer Soccer's National Team of the Week. Tompkins preserved both shutouts in goal, making nine saves. She had three at Arizona, while making six saves at ASU on Sunday. She had several key stops in the second half to preserve the 1-0 victory at ASU, making a diving save on a point-blank shot off a breakaway in the 63rd minute and then made two more saves in the 83rd minute as the Sun Devils pushed numbers forward to try to get a late equalizer. Tompkins now has a shutout streak of 440 minutes, stopping the past 23 shots she has faced.

CU (9-3-0, 3-0-0 Pac-12) will host Oregon at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday at Prentup Field and Oregon State at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Buffs take a seven-match winning streak into their homestand this weekend.
