Buffs Continue To Roll, Go 5-0 In Conference For First Time Ever

October 09, 2016 | Soccer

BOULDER - Colorado's soccer team won its ninth consecutive match as the Buffaloes took down Oregon State 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Prentup Field. CU improved to 11-3 overall this season and 5-0 in the Pac-12, while OSU dropped to 5-7-2 and 0-5 in league play.

It is the first 5-0 start to conference play in CU history, including the 16 seasons in the Big 12. The Buffs were 4-0 to start the 2003 season in the Big 12.

WHAT HAPPENED: The Buffaloes were in control from the opening whistle, outshooting OSU 9-1 in the first half.

Sarah Kinzner put the Buffs up 1-0 at 16:37, hitting a rocket into the upper-right corner of the net from 25 yard out on the left win. She had a throw-in to Danica Evans, who touched the ball back to Kinzner for the shot.

Taylor Kornieck gave CU a 2-0 lead at 25:04, converting a wide-open shot from 25 yards out in the center of the field, finding the lower-left corner of the net. She was set up by Evans and Emily Bruder on the play.

Evans got her third and fourth points of the match at 67:05, scoring off a corner kick. Stephanie Zuniga's corner to the far post was headed towards the goal by Alex Vidger and Evans deflected the ball in with her knee for a 3-0 lead.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: Kornieck broke Nikki Marshall's school record for consecutive matches with a goal with a score in her fifth match in a row. Marshall had a streak of four matches in a row with a goal three times in her career (twice in 2006 and once in 2007).

CU's defense held the Beavers to just two shots on goal and Jalen Tompkins made both saves for her sixth shutout this season.

UP NEXT: CU will host Washington at 3 p.m. on Friday at Prentup Field.

NOTES: Evans's four points were a career high in her two years at Colorado … CU last led a conference match 2-0 at halftime last season against Arizona … Bruder has a goal and an assist in the past two matches for a her second points streak of the season … Tompkins passed Annie Brunner for the most shutouts by a CU freshman in school history with her sixth (Brunner had five in 2010) ... Vidger's assist was the first of her career.

POSTGAME QUOTES
Danny Sanchez, head coach
On momentum picking up into conference schedule
"It was great to be home. I was really pleased with how we came out today. I thought we came out slow on Thursday. I was really pleased with the energy we came out with the energy. It was a great crowd today. We really want to implore the community, the campus, our student-athletes and our student body to come out and watch this team. We have a big game next Friday against Washington and we want to get a big crowd making some noise because it really helps us, I thought they helped us today. Back to your question, I thought we came out with good energy and deserved the 2-0 lead at halftime.

On Joss Oregel and Kahlia Hogg injury updates
"Same old, they are working hard and hopefully we will get them back soon."

On keeping a clean sheet
"I thought JJ (Jalen Tompkins) managed the game well, she didn't have a lot to deal with. I'm really pleased with the players we had back there. I thought Courtney (Fedor) once again stepped up. I thought Megan Massey gave us some minutes back there as well. It's going to be by committee and everyone has bought into what we are doing so we just slot the next person in and hopefully we don't miss a beat."

On defense growing stronger during the season
"I just think there is cohesion. There is good leadership. Even though Kahlia (Hogg) is out, Mikaela (Kraus) is a great leader for us, she's a good voice back there. The principals of what we do defensively don't change just the personnel and hopefully the personnel step up and they did this weekend."

On being 5-0 in conference but staying focused
"Obviously all of our focus is on Washington on Friday. It's a big weekend for us. We will have all of our alumni back for the 20th anniversary so we will have some even from the first year's team and a lot of the recent alum's as well. We will have a lot of our official visits for 2017 where the commitments will be taking their official visits. So it's going to be a big game so all of our focus is on Friday. Washington is a very good team that has played a tough schedule so all of our focus will be on Washington on Friday."

Danica Evans, Sr., F
On the Team's Aggressive Play
"I think we came out with a lot of energy from the start.  The energy that we brought helped us with the game and we were able to connect passes, and get plenty of shots off that lead to our three goals."

On the Team's Winning Streak
"I think it starts with our training.  We've been working hard at training and we've been working hard both defensively and offensively.  And when you carry that into the game, bringing great energy from the start its helping us get those wins.  And its helping us get the momentum we need to get those goals early."

On Confidence for the Team
"Our confidence is high, but it can't be too high because we still have plenty of games to go against tough opponents.  So we've got to keep our heads and just keep working hard."

Taylor Kornieck, Fr., M/F
On Scoring in Five Straight Games (A CU Freshman Record)
"It's getting harder as we go through the season.  And now I'm getting covered heavily by the other teams.  I have a great connection with my forwards and they just know how to find me so I can put it in the back of the net."

On the Team's Momentum
"We just need to keep going.  We don't take any game for granted and we just need to keep moving along.  We need to keep the momentum going for every game that's ahead of us."

On Getting a Win This Coming Weekend Before Heading Out to the Bay Area
"I feel like every game is important.  Washington will be important for us this Friday, because we have the crowd behind us and we've just got to bring the energy from the start and hopefully we can get a win and we can take that on the road to Stanford."
