Thweatt Places Fifth In 10K Final, Morris Advances In the 100
July 02, 2016 | Track and Field
EUGENE, Ore. — Former University of Colorado Buffalo Laura Thweatt recorded a fifth place finish in the women's 10,000-meter run final on Saturday afternoon at the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Team Trials, barely missing a spot on the U.S. roster for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
                                                                    Â
Thweatt ran a brilliant race, finishing in 32 minutes, 26.11 seconds, but unfortunately it was not fast enough to earn one of the top three spots to advance to the Olympics.
Â
For the majority of the race, Thweatt was in the top third. She dropped down to 11th with 19 laps remaining, but just a short time later, she was up to second after a big move. Thweatt gradually fell back again as the race continued, but still came away with a great effort. The Durango, Colo. native is not finished at the trials as she will return to the track on July 7 to race in the first round of the 5,000.
Â
All three women's 10k Olympic qualifiers finished the race under 32 minutes. Molly Huddle won in 31:41.62 after leading the whole way, while Emily Infeld was second (31:46.09). Marielle Hall earned the third and final position in 31:54.77.
Â
Another former Buff, Joe Morris, ran in the first section of the 100-meter dash, and qualified for the semi-finals on Sunday at 1:01 p.m. PT.
Â
The field left the blocks, but was called back after Isaiah Young recorded a false start lane six.  After they regrouped, the race got out to a quick start. Morris was right there at the finish, placing second in 10.09 behind Michael Rodgers (10.00). Arkansas' Kenzo Cotton placed third in the heat to also move on to the semifinals as the top three advance.

The U.S. Olympic Team Trials continue through July 10. A complete schedule for current and former CU athletes is below.
