July 21, 2016 | Volleyball

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — University of Colorado volleyball assistant coach Lee Maes became the fifth Buffalo this summer to be a part in the USA Volleyball High Performance program, serving as the head coach of the USAV Women's Junior Continental Team program.

"It's always an honor to represent and serve USA Volleyball," Maes said. "I have had the good fortune to serve in various coaching capacities with our USA High Performance and National Team programs for over 20 years. I embrace the wonderful opportunity to help develop some of our nation's best and expose them to the techniques and systems of our Women's National Team. The USA High Performance program is our country's pipeline for future Olympic hopefuls and the High Performance Championships offers athletes exposure to international competition."

Training for the program ran July 14-18 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. The team was then divided into two teams called Stars and Stripes, with Maes leading the Stars into competition at the USAV High Performance Championships (July 19-23) in the Women's Junior International Division.

Over the course of the last couple of months, four of CU's athletes have been a part of three USA Volleyball teams. Senior Cierra Simpson and redshirt freshman Taylor Joachim were part of the USAV Collegiate National Training Team, which competed in Indianapolis. Sophomore Alexa Smith was a member of the USAC CNT-China program and junior Gabby Simpson was selected to the USAV CNT-Europe program.
