CU Opens Season On Friday At Air Force

BOULDER - Colorado's soccer team will open the 2016 season on Friday at Air Force at 6 p.m. The Buffaloes will return home on Sunday to face Colorado State at Prentup Field at 3 p.m. Friday's complete match notes are attached in the PDF in the links to the right.

Up Next
• CU opens the season at Air Force on Friday at 6 p.m.
• It will be the first time the Buffs have opened the season against Air Force.
• CU is 10-5-5 all-time in season-opening matches, including 3-1-4 in season-openers on the road.
• CU is 5-1 all-time vs. Air Force and 1-1 on the road an has won its past five matches against the Falcons.
• The Buffs play their home opener on Sunday at 3 p.m. vs. Colorado State, a match that will be televised on Pac-12 Network.

• The Buffs have five international players on their roster this season, the most-ever in school history.

• Junior transfer Hannah Scheid, who will have to sit out this season due to NCAA eligibility rules, is the first Buff to come from Germany.
• Sophomore Sarah Kinzner and freshman Camilla Shymka both hail from Calgary, Alberta, and are members of the Canada U-20 National Team.
• Senior Kahlia Hogg and sophomore Isobel Dalton are both natives of Australia.
Spring Recap
• CU finished the spring with a 4-0-2 record, defeating Air Force (1-0), Denver (2-1), Colorado College (1-0) and Nebraska (3-1), and tying Northern Colorado (1-1) and South Dakota State (1-1).

Hogg Returns
• Kahlia Hogg is back for her senior season after missing the majority of last season with an injury.
• She started the first six matches last season and led CU to a 4-1-1 record during that time, but the Buffs went 3-9-2 without her in the lineup over the final 14 matches.

National Team Notes
• Kornieck traveled to England in July for two matches and training with the U-20 Women's National Team and started both matches against England.
• Kinzner started all five matches for Canada at the 2015 CONCACAF U-20 Championship in Honduras and scored two goals (one against Trinidad & Tobago and one against Jamaica), helping Canada reach the finals (United States won 1-0).
• Shymka also competed for Canada at the 2015 CONCACAF U-20 Championship in Honduras and played in two matches as a reserve, totaling 27 minutes on the pitch.
Colorado Cup Notes
• CU opens the season with two of its three Colorado Cup matches, traveling to Air Force on Aug. 19 and hosting Colorado State on Aug. 21 (along with two neutral-site Colorado Cup matches between Northern Colorado/Air Force and Denver/Colorado College).
• Colorado has won the Colorado Cup in four of the five seasons of the competition and finished second in 2013.
• Erin Greening and Mikaela Kraus are CU's two returning players who have scored in the Colorado Cup, each scoring one goal last season (Greening vs. CC and Kraus vs. DU).

Kinzner Shines at CONCACAF Championship
• Sarah Kinzner competed for Canada at the 2015 CONCACAF Women's U-20 Championship in Honduras in December.
• Kinzner started all five matches and scored two goals, leading Canada to the finals against the United States.
• Canada qualified for the 2016 U-20 World Cup by finishing in the top three (Canada lost 1-0 to the United States in the finals).

Offensive MVP: Danica Evans (scored five goals and had three assists, starting 19 of 20 matches)
Defensive MVP: Madison Krauser (had four assists and started all 20 matches)
Freshman of the Year: Sarah Kinzner (scored one goal and had two assists in 20 starts)
Academic Award: Kate Scheele (3.89 GPA, also 1.14 GAA and .747 save percentage in 16 starts as the team's goalkeeper)
Sports Performance Award: Kenzie Tillitt (recognized as the team's hardest worker in the weight room and conditioning drills by the sports performance staff)
Newcomers Making an Impact
• Last season, freshmen Erin Greening, Sarah Kinzner, Brooklyn Varnadore, Alex Vidger and Stephanie Zuniga along with Portland transfer Danica Evans each stepped up, playing important roles this season, whether starting or coming off the bench.
• The group of newcomers combined for 50 starts, nine goals, five assists and 106 shot attempts, or 38 percent of the team's goals and 39 percent of the team's shots.
• Redshirt freshman Scout Watson started four of the final seven matches in goal and had a 1.89 GAA and .529 save percentage on the season in six appearances.

• Colorado returns five starters this season and in the four previous seasons when the Buffs have returned seven or fewer starters, they have reached the NCAA Tournament twice and have averaged 11 wins.
