Buffs Come Up Short In 1-0 Loss At KU Despite Strong Play
August 26, 2016 | Soccer
LAWRENCE, Kan. - Kansas scored less than 18 minutes into the match and held on for a 1-0 win over Colorado on Friday night at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kan.
Â
The Buffaloes were handed their first loss of the season, dropping to 2-1, while KU improved to 2-1.
Â
WHAT HAPPENED: Colorado dominated both possession and scoring chances the entire match, but the net evaded the Buffs' offense.
Â
CU's first two big scoring chances came in the 10th minute when Taylor Kornieck ripped a shot from the top of the 18-yard box and the KU goalkeeper was unable to control the rebound. Danica Evans was there, but fired the rebound right back at the goalkeeper for another save to keep the match scoreless.
Â
The Jayhawks scored the only goal of the match at 17:46. As a CU defender was tripped up at the top of the box, KU's Mandi Duggan gained possession and had an easy 1v1 with the goalkeeper for the score, pushing it towards the far-right post.
Â
In the 30th minute, Kornieck one-touched a shot from the center of the box on goal, connecting on a cross from the right corner. Evans also had a one-touch shot saved eight minutes later.
Â
One of the best scoring chances for CU came in the 53rd minute. Stephanie Zuniga had a shot from the top of the 6-yard box that was saved and the rebound trickled just wide of the right post as Camilla Shymka came up a step short from reaching the rebound before it crossed the endline.
Â
Evans had a great chance in the 86th minute as her header landed on top of the net, inches over the crossbar.
Â
The final shot chart had CU outshooting Kansas 15-14, including 8-6 in shots on goal. The Buffs held a 9-5 shot advantage in the first half.
Â
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: Jalen Tompkins came on midway through the first half to replace Scout Watson, who left with an injury, and made four saves in goal. Watson made one save prior to her departure.
Â
Kornieck attempted seven shots, including four on goal, and Evans had four shots.
Â
UP NEXT: CU will play at Missouri on Sunday at 6 p.m. MT in a battle of two former Big 12 schools that have moved on. Missouri has since joined the SEC.
Â
QUOTABLE:
Danny Sanchez, head coach
On the goal by Duggan early in the match
"It was a ball that squirted through and their player beat us to the ball and slid to the far post. It was a good finish, but a situation we could have done better with. But it was early in the game and we had plenty of opportunities after that."
Â
On coming up short on quite a few scoring chances
"Give credit to the Kansas goalkeeper. She made three really good saves in first half and another in second half. We created quite a few opportunities against a good team on the road and I'm happy with that. Those are going to start going in. Sometimes you take two shots and they go in and sometimes you take 15 and none go in. Hopefully on Sunday we get some of those to go in."
Â
NOTES: CU dropped to 9-8-1 all-time against Kansas and the Buffs have dropped both decisions since CU left the Big 12 in 2012 … Colorado was seeking to start the season 3-0 for just the third time in 21 seasons … Kornieck's seven shot attempts were the most for a CU freshman since 2013 and only the ninth time in school history a freshman has attempted seven or more shots … the Buffs dropped to 4-5-1 under Sanchez against Power 5 non-conference opponents … the loss when outshooting its opponent is a rarity for CU as the Buffs dropped to 35-7-4 under Sanchez when attempting more shots than their opponent.
