Bruder Breaks Out As Buffs Roll Over Iowa 4-1

September 11, 2016 | Soccer

BOULDER - Colorado continued its hot streak with its third straight win on Sunday, rolling past Iowa 4-1 at Prentup Field behind two first-half goals by Emily Bruder. The Buffaloes improved to 5-3-0 on the season, while Iowa had its six-match winning streak snapped as the Hawkeyes dropped to 6-2-0.

It was Bruder's breakout match as the senior transfer from North Carolina entered the match scoreless on the season, despite coming in with 18 shot attempts. She led UNC in goals scored in 2014.

WHAT HAPPENED: It was all CU in the first half as the Buffaloes scored three times. Bruder gave the Buffs a quick with her first goal of the season coming at 3:27. Joss Orejel served a long pass to Bruder, who got ahead of the defense. She pushed her breakaway shot past the Iowa goalkeeper in the middle of the box.

Bruder stretched the lead to 2-0 at 20:37 on a nearly identical play, this time the pass coming from Sarah Kinzner near midfield.

Kahlia Hogg scored her first goal of the season at 40:48. She took a free kick from the right side of the field, 35 yards out. Her shot slipped over the goalkeeper's hands into the far side of the net.

Bruder could have had two more goals in the first half as she had a breakaway saved in the 12th minute and another shot from the top of the box stopped by a diving goalkeeper in the 14th minute.

Iowa got on the board at 55:42 when Olivia Fiegel put in a rebound after Scout Watson saved Bri Toelle's initial shot.

CU got that goal right back at 65:31 when Camilla Shymka scored the first goal of her career on a breakaway after Stephanie Zuniga put her in front of Iowa's defense with a long pass.

The Buffs owned an 8-3 shots advantage in the first half, but Iowa outshot CU 11-6 in the second half.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: It was Bruder's day was the led the team in goals and shots (6). The only other CU player with more than one shot attempt was Hogg, who had two as CU and Iowa finished the match an even 14-14 in shot attempts. Scout Watson, who came on for Jalen Tompkins in the second half at goalkeeper, allowed Iowa's only goal, but also made four saves. Tompkins did not face a shot on goal in the first half.

UP NEXT: CU will wrap up non-conference play with its final match of the Colorado Cup on Saturday when it hosts the University of Denver at noon at Prentup Field. A win on Saturday will clinch the fifth Colorado Cup championship in the competition's sixth season.

NOTES: It was the second time in CU history that the Buffs have scored in the first four minutes in back-to-back matches (the other time was 2013) … Hogg's goal was her first since Oct. 12, 2014 … it was head coach Danny Sanchez's first win over a Big Ten opponent at CU, moving to 1-2-1 in four matches vs. the Big Ten since 2012 … Orejel's assist was her first of the season and eighth of her career … Zuniga moved into a tie with Danica Evans for the team lead in assist this season with three each … Taylor Kornieck had her three-match point streak snapped, though she rested for much of the second half … it was the 198th win in CU history and the Buffs are 198-176-43 all-time.

Postgame Interviews
Danny Sanchez, head coach
On how the team played in the game
"Obviously Iowa coming in 6-1, it's a good team. I thought we played well, especially in the first half. We really kept that tempo up and getting that third goal from Kahlia was key. (Iowa coach) Dave (Dilanni)'s a very good coach, so I told the team 'they're going to change their tactics, they're going to come after us and try to make game.' And sure enough I thought we came out slow in the second half and they get the goal. But, I felt after that we kept our composure and played a good game. Obviously, I'm really pleased at Emily, got a couple of goals. She's been working hard and sometimes as a striker you're only based on your goals so it was nice for her. And obviously for Camilla to get one as well. It's going to be by committee and we know that. And we have some other players step up today, so this is a very good win against a very good Iowa program."

On Tompkins' and Scout's performance in the game and what it means for the future
"I thought she [JJ] did really well but I thought Scout did very well. Nothing to do on that goal, controlled her box, had a lot more action than JJ. We have two very good goalkeepers. That competition's going to be week to week and game to game and they both know that. But, they're both professionals. They approach it professionally in training. So, whoever is sharper in training will play with Denver next Saturday.

On the defense and their performance in the game
"We knew they were going to change the tactics a little bit. I was a little disappointed with the second half, how we came out and didn't deal with their pressure and gave up a goal. Going forward, we need to keep that intensity for 90 minutes. I think we kept it for 80. But, for Denver and especially Pac-12 play, we have to be intense for 90. Overall, we really limited their good opportunities and it was a good performance by the backs."

On how the team handled the intensity of the game
"In a game when you play at this high of a level it's going to be intense. I was really pleased with how we kept our composure. Great leadership on the field from Morgan (Stanton) and Kahlia (Hogg), keeping their composure and continuing to play. There's going to be moments where you're frustrated. There's going to be moments where the other team is frustrated and you have to get through those. I was really pleased with how they continued to play. And really pleased with how, when we brought off the players off the bench, there wasn't a drop off in those last 20-25 minutes. We really kept the tempo up and really created quite a few opportunities."

On what the team is expecting for the Colorado Cup and how they're preparing for it
"The Colorado Cup, this is the second thing I'm going to say to them today when I talk to them today. It's going to be about getting ready for Denver. It's not about what the records are, it doesn't matter how things are going. It's going to be a Saturday noon game, right before the CU-Michigan (fooball) game and it's going to be on TV, so we're expecting a huge crowd. And it's an opportunity to win the Colorado Cup, which is one of our four main goals during the season. They're playing very well. They've got Hawaii tonight, so they can be on a three-game winning streak just like us. So we need to be ready to play. We will be because that will be all our focus is getting ready for that game Saturday."

Emily Bruder, forward, senior
On scoring her first two goals of the season
"It felt great, getting two goals into the season. It was good balls played by my teammates. What's nice about it is everyone is being successful. Whoever scores, it doesn't matter. It's just a matter of getting it in the net. And I feel like all of us are being able to do that, so it's great so far."

On what this game means for the team in the future
"This is just preparation for our season and we're taking every game seriously. Every game I feel like counts for us. It is a preparation for us. And we're just getting ready for the Pac-12 and I think our main goal is to do our best and reach for whatever we can. We want to make it far and we do have goals to get into the NCAA Tournament. And we do want to take a lot of wins and I think we've worked hard for it. We all want to do it for each other. No one is selfish on this team; everyone just wants to get it done and do it well."

On how the team came off its losing streak
"We were kind of on a losing streak for a little bit, and that was kind of tough on us. But, the nice thing was that it was close games and we knew that we could do better than that. In the past few games, we proved to ourselves that we can do better than that. And now we're just looking forward to the next few games. I think this is good preparation for the future. At practices everyone is taking it seriously, everyone is wanting to get better and everyone is wanting to improve. Even just whenever we're taking it into the treatment room or on and off the field, we're really just focused and ready to play."

On what winning the Colorado Cup would mean for the team
"I'm new to this team, obviously, and I wasn't sure of what to expect. Over time, I learned that it is important and that it is important to set the standard that we are the best in Colorado and we want to be the best in Colorado. It also makes us realize that we don't want just this, we want more and we want to push past that. We want to do better in our season and this is just to help us get there. We want to be the best here and we want to come out hard. It is a rivalry. So we want to give it to them and to do our best."

Jalen Tompkins, goalkeeper, redshirt freshman
On how she relies on the defense
"I think we have a big trust on this team. I think everybody can trust each other. I think I rely on my defense and the rely on me a little bit. But, they do more of the work than I do. I just try to make the saves when I need to, but they do all the work."

On what it was like playing in the first half as a goalie
"[The defense] took care of business, our forwards did, our midfielders did. We were connecting well. I took a couple of goal kicks and punts, but they did everything for me and that's what I want. If I can just sit back there and do my job and they can take care of business, then it's going to be a great season."

On her relationship  with the defense
"On and off the field I think we're a cohesive unit. We love to be around each other, we live with each other for the most part. But, it's good. Even in practice we focus on game like situations. Danny is taking over the defense very well and has worked on clearing, heading, and 'who's got the ball,' staying compact and connected. And that's the key. And I just try to communicate that and communicate what he wants, hopefully, to the best I can."

On what the Colorado Cup means for the team
"I think a rivalry game is huge. It's going to be a close game no matter what. I think we have a chance to take care of business and prove ourselves even more. I think when you believe in a team, a program, and university as much as we do and the coaches do, every game is huge. I'm excited. I think the whole team's excited. We're not going to take it any differently than if it was a Stanford game."
