CU To Host Denver Saturday For Colorado Cup Finale

BOULDER - Colorado will host Denver on Saturday in the final match of the Colorado Cup. Kickoff will be at noon at Prentup Field. It will also be Bike To Prentup day. The first 100 fans to arrive on their bikes will receive free water bottles and there will be plenty of opportunities to park bikes at the field. If the Buffs win or tie, they will win the Colorado Cup (details are in the Match Notes PDF).

Up Next
•   CU will play its final non-conference match and final match of the Colorado Cup on Saturday at noon against Denver at Prentup Field.
•   A win will give CU its fifth Colorado Cup championship in the tournament's six seasons.
20th Anniversary, 200 Wins
•   2016 is the 20th anniverary of the first season of soccer at CU in 1996.
•   The program currently has an all-time record of 198-176-43, closing in on the 200-win milestone.
Kornieck A Pac-12 Leader
•   Taylor Kornieck leads the Pac-12 in points (tied) and shot attempts, and game-winning goals (tied) and is second in goals (complete rankings are on page 8).
Freshman First
•   Taylor Kornieck became the first CU freshman ever to have back-to-back two-goal games when she scored twice (and had an assist) against Drexel and scored two more times against Hawai'i on Sept. 4 and 9.
Kornieck's Historic Performance
•   Taylor Kornieck had five points in a 5-0 win over Drexel and it was just the third time in CU history a freshman has recorded five points in a match.
•   Kornieck had two goals and one assist in the match.
•   Former USWNT player and current volunteer assistant Nikki Marshall is the only other Buff to have five points in a match as a freshman and she did it twice in 2006.
Offense Breaks Out
•   After having several unlucky losses where CU outshot its opponents considerably and dominated possession, the offense broke out of its slump with a 5-0 win over Drexel on Sept. 4, converting five of its 26 shot attempts (14 on goal).
•   Taylor Kornieck (see note above) had the biggest performance, but Sarah Kinzner, Danica Evans and Stephanie Zuniga also got in the scoring column against the Dragons.
•   Heading into the Drexel match, CU has outshot its opponents 79-52 over the previous four matches, yet the team has been outscored 6-4.
•   Over the past three matches, CU has outscored its opponents 12-2.

•   Danica Evans and Taylor Kornieck came in at No. 2 on SportsCenter's Top 10 on Sept. 9 after an impressive goal in the third minute a 3-1 win over Hawai'i.
•   Evans used her traditional flip throw to throw the ball into play from the left sideline and Kornieck headed the throw into the far side of the net.
Newcomers Making an Impact
•   In eight matches this season, newcomers have eight of the team's 18 goals (44 percent), five assists (31 percent) and 84 shot attempts (54 percent), while combining for 27 starts.
•   Freshman Taylor Kornieck leads the team in most offensive categories, including goals, points and shot attempts.
•   Additionally, redshirt freshman Jalen Tompkins has made six starts and leads the goalkeepers with a 0.80 GAA and .833 save percentage, while posting a 5-2-0 record.
Season Opener Notes
•   CU is now 11-5-5 all-time in season-opening matches and 4-1-4 in season openers on the road.
•   CU is now unbeaten in its past 13 season openers (last loss in 2003 to Portland).
Home Opener Notes
•   CU's 2-1 win over Colorado State on Aug. 21 stretched the team's unbeaten streak in home openers to 13 matches and winning streak to eight, while improving the all-time record in home openers to 16-4-1.
•   The goal CU allowed in the first half was the first goal allowed in a home opener in 754 minutes and 19 seconds (the previous goal allowed in a home opener was in 2008 against Florida).
•   When Taylor Kornieck scored in the seventh minute against CSU, it made this the fourth consecutive season a freshman has scored in the home opener (Erin Greening 2015, Brittney Stark 2014, Brie Hooks 2013).
Kinzner's Late Score
•   Sarah Kinzner scored with three seconds left in the first half in CU's season-opening 2-0 win at Air Force for a 1-0 hafltime lead.
•   It was the latest goal ever scored in the first half by a CU player, besting the previous-latest of 44:44 by Storie Ledger in 2012 at Arizona.
•   It was only the fourth goal ever scored in the 45th minute by a Buffs player.
Colorado Cup Notes (complete notes on pages 26-28)
•   CU opened the season with two of its three Colorado Cup matches, traveling to Air Force on Aug. 19 (won 2-0) and hosting Colorado State on Aug. 21 (won 2-1).
•   Colorado has won the Colorado Cup in four of the five seasons of the competition and finished second in 2013.
•   Erin Greening and Mikaela Kraus are CU's two returning players who have scored in the Colorado Cup, each scoring one goal last season (Greening vs. CC and Kraus vs. DU).

National Team Notes
•   Kornieck traveled to England in July for two matches and training with the U-18 Women's National Team and started both matches against England.
