Evans Nets Overtime Winner As Buffs Take Colorado Cup

September 17, 2016 | Soccer

BOULDER - Danica Evans scored in the final minute of the first overtime to give Colorado a 1-0 win over the University of Denver on Saturday afternoon at Prentup Field. It was the fourth consecutive win for the Buffaloes, who wrapped up non-conference play with a 6-3 record.

Evans scored at 99:18 off a scrum in front of the net. She calmly collected a failed clear off a Taylor Kornieck shot that was blocked and buried it toward the right post.

The win also clinched the Colorado Cup for the Buffs as it is their fifth tournament championship in the sixth season of the competition between the six Division I schools in Colorado. CU finished this year's tournament with a perfect 3-0 record.

WHAT HAPPENED: CU and DU entered halftime scoreless, despite scoring chances from both sides. Jalen Tompkins made three saves in the first half and DU's Cassidy Rey stopped all six Buffs shots that were on target, including a diving one-handed stop against Camilla Shymka in the 35th minute.

Shymka had the best scoring of the second half as well. In the 89th minute, she had an open shot from the center of the box. Her shot toward the upper-left corner of the net was again stopped with a diving, one-handed save.

CU controlled the run of play for most of the match and outshot DU 20-10, including 3-0 in overtime.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: Kornieck had a team-high five shot attempts and Evans shot four times, including her game-winning goal. Tompkins made six saves in goal and the back line of Kahlia Hogg, Joss Orejel, Erin Greening, Kelsey Aaknes and Alex Vidger helped keep the majority of shots by DU from long range.

UP NEXT: The Buffs open Pac-12 play next weekend, taking on Washington State on Friday at 6 p.m. MT in Pullman, Wash.

NOTES: It was the second time CU has been tied 0-0 at halftime (Michigan State the other time) … Evans's goal at 99:18 was the latest ever scored in the first overtime period (previous was 98:28 by Lizzy Herzl in 2010 against UCLA) … it was the 21st overtime win for CU all-time and first in three matches this season … CU improved to 12-8-1 all-time against DU with its fourth straight win in the series … it was the second clean sheet for freshman Tompkins.

Postgame Quotes

Danny Sanchez, head coach
On the game overall
"I think sometimes the tendencies in the back and in goal is to relax. I thought we stayed sharp and focused. Denver put some good pressure on us towards the end of the game especially in the first overtime. I was pleased with what we did. One of our objectives for this game was to allow no goals. We really felt today that we needed to keep a clean sheet. We knew going into this game it was going to be a one goal game. Every time we play Denver it's going to be like this. It's a local derby. It's going to be a battle so I thought we rose to the challenge. We had a great week of training and I think it was a well-deserved win at the end of the day."

On finding ways to win
"Now the fun begins. It's been fun but now the fun really begins. Every game we play is going to be like this. It's going to be a battle, both teams are really pushing for results especially as we get into Pac-12 play. I think this is a good test for us going into the Pac-12. Like I said earlier in the week, throw the records out going into this game. We knew that this was going to be this type of game and we are really pleased with how our team responded. We have been in overtime a few times and hadn't had success so it was nice to get a result in overtime."

On clinching the Colorado Cup
"Every time we play a Colorado school, but especially when we play Denver, they are a great program with a great coach and I thought they really came to play today. From what we saw earlier in the year in the Colorado Cup it's night and day. Does it make it sweeter? Yeah, but every win for us is sweet."

On Taylor Kornieck's development and confidence
"She's a handful. It's not just set pieces, she's good on the ball and she's good in the final third. She had an assist on the goal tonight and she keeps stuff alive for us in the box and she also defends very well. I felt that everyone in the midfield played very well. Sarah (Kinzner) played very well, Morgan (Stanton) was her usual 100 minutes or whatever it was. I thought Megan Massey in the second half and overtime played really well. We are pleased, it was a good time win. Now it's all about getting ready for Washington State on Friday."

On winning Colorado Cup three years in a row
"This is one of our goals one of our four main goals of the season and we are pleased to have it and keep it (the Colorado Cup) here in Boulder. Now we can focus on Pac-12 play."

Danica Evans, Sr., F
On the Game Winning Goal
"It felt good, since we were trying to win the Colorado Cup.  And we had so many chances throughout the game and it just felt great to see us win the game, and to see that ball go in the net."

On the Second Half's Intensity
"We just needed to keep our composure and do what we do best.  Denver was trying to get the ball up the field, but our defense stayed compact.  [They] were doing their job and they got the ball up to our forwards and let us play."

On Team's Aggressiveness Going into Conference Play
"We're coming out to start our games with more energy.  And that just sets up the game for us.  We're getting shots off and playing well together.  And as long as we keep doing that during Pac-12, we should be good.  Also if our defense stays strong, Jalen Tompkins and Scout Watson stay solid in goal and if we finish our opportunities up top, we're going to continue to win and score goals."

Jalen Tompkins, Rs-Fr., GK
On How the Team Performed
"I thought we were solid throughout the whole game, and we were solid throughout the whole field.  But I'm really proud of my defense.  We stuck together and everyone communicated really well, and everyone was marking well.  We stayed compact and connected and we did everything the coaches told us to do before.  I'm really happy with my defense, they did their job and tracked really well.  During the overtime I was going crazy back in my goal because I just wanted us to score.  Then finally Danica Evans took care of it and she did what she does best and scored."

On How the Second Half Ended
"I think in the game of soccer in the first and last five minutes of any half are the biggest.  They pushed and they wanted that goal and they wanted to win as much as we did.  I think our defense really held them back, since they really only had a couple of long shots and I believe they only had one corner kick in the game, so you really can't complain about that.  The shots at the end were pretty simple to take care of, since our defense handled them well.  Erin Greening cleaned up a ball, she made a nice play by sliding and keeping it from going to a 1 v 1 situation.  It's all I can ask of them, is to put their bodies on the line."
