Buffs Start Pac-12 Slate At Home Against Utah & Arizona

BOULDER — The 16th-ranked Colorado volleyball team will open up the 2016 Pac-12 Conference schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 21 against Utah. CU will face Arizona in the second match of the week on Sunday, Sept. 25.

Both matches will be at Coors Events Center. The contest against Utah is slated to begin at 7 p.m., while Sunday's match against Arizona has a 1 p.m. start. The Pac-12 Networks will televise both matches this week.

ABOUT THE BUFFS: The Buffs moved up to 16th in the latest AVCA Poll and head into action this week with an 8-2 record. CU is also a perfect 5-0 at home this season. As a team, CU ranks seventh in the NCAA in hitting percentage (.301) and is 10th in blocks per set (3.01).

Individually, the Buffs are led by Alexa Smith, who is averaging 3.47 kills per set. At the net, the Buffs have two players posting over 1.00 blocks per set. Sophomore Naghede Abu is averaging the 20th best total in the country at 1.49 blocks per set, while junior Joslyn Hayes is second on the team with 1.29 blocks per set (45th in the NCAA). Abu ranks sixth in the Pac-12, while Hayes is 10th.

Junior Gabby Simpson and senior Kiara McKibben have been running a very successful 6-2 offense, as seen in CU's hitting efficiency which is the second highest in the league. Simpson is averaging 5.77 assists per set, but also adds 1.96 kills per set as well. McKibben is recording 6.77 assists per set, the ninth best mark in the Pac-12.

ABOUT UTAH: Utah enters Wednesday's match with a 9-2 record, which includes a 3-2 win over then-No. 9 BYU in Provo, Utah. The Utes have done well on the road early this season and are a perfect 3-0. Â They are averaging 14.44 kills per set, which leads the Pac-12 and ranks 11th in the nation. Adora Anae is a huge part of that as she is recording the nation's ninth best kills per set average at 4.73. Carly Truman is second on the team with 2.98 kills per set. Utah is attacking at a .292 clip and holds its opponents to a .198 hitting efficiency. UU leads the all-time series against the Buffs at 8-7. Colorado has won the last four matches at Coors against the Utes.

ABOUT ARIZONA: The Arizona Wildcats are 8-4 heading into Pac-12 play. They will host Arizona State on Wednesday prior to heading to Boulder and are currently on a five-match win streak. The Wildcats are 0-3 this season against ranked opponents. Kendra Dahlke is the top offensive weapon, averaging 4.10 kills per set, the third best mark in the Pac-12, and Kalei Mau adds 3.41, which is 10th in the Pac-12. As a team, the Wildcats lead the conference with 1.66 aces per set and individually Penina Snuka is first in the Pac-12, 13th in the NCAA, with 0.54 aces per set. Arizona leads the all-time series 6-5, but has struggled in Boulder in recent years, dropping its last three matches in straight sets.

CLEAR BAG POLICY
In an effort to provide a safer environment for fans, the University of Colorado will be implementing a clear bag policy at the Coors Events Center for all CU volleyball matches, men's basketball and women's basketball games this season (2016).

Beginning this season, fans may bring one clear bag no larger than 12 inches x 6 inches x 12 inches, or a one-gallon reseal-able clear plastic storage bag, into the arena. Fans will also be allowed one small clutch purse, no larger than 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches.         Â

Bags that will no longer be allowed into the CEC include backpacks, large purses, oversized tote bags, camera bags and binocular cases, diaper bags, fanny packs and printed plastic bags.

- Approximately 40 minutes prior to the Utah match, CU head coach Jesse Mahoney will hold a chalk talk in the Coors Club room on the second floor of the CEC, located behind section 3. It is open to all fans.
- There will also be a post-match autograph session following the Utah match on the concourse above section 4.
- CU will host a post-match youth clinic on Sunday afternoon following CU's match against Arizona. Fans are encouraged to RSVP at CUBuffs.com/VBClinic.
