Kornieck's Late Score Gives CU 200th Win In School History

September 23, 2016 | Soccer

PULLMAN, Wash. - Freshman Taylor Kornieck, playing her first Pac-12 match, scored in the 89th minute to give Colorado a 1-0 win at Washington State. It was the first-ever win for the Buffaloes in Pullman, Wash., as they improved to 7-3 on the season in the conference-opening match. WSU dropped to 5-3-1.

It was also the 200th win in CU history. The Buffs are in their 21st season of soccer and now have an all-time record of 200-176-43.

WHAT HAPPENED: For the first time this season, an opponent had the run of play in the first half as Washington State outshot CU 11-2 through halftime. Jalen Tompkins was key for CU, making five saves in goal. However, few of WSU's shots came from inside the box as the Buffs' defense kept the scoring chances to a minimum.

CU had a couple of scoring chances in the first half when WSU's defense was slow to clear bouncing balls through the box, including one off a corner in the 23rd minute. WSU's only real threat came in the 28th minute when Morgan Weaver hit the far post with a shot, but Erin Greening was home to clear the ball immediately.

The Buffs came out firing early in the second half, hitting the goal frame with a pair of shots in the first four minutes. Thirty seconds into the half, Danica Evans rocketed a shot off the post and less than four minutes later, Kornieck's header banged off the crossbar following a free kick.

The Cougars hit the crossbar with a shot of their own in the 77th minute as Kelsee Crenshaw blasted a shot from 30 yards out.

Kornieck sent another header inches over the bar as it grazed the top of the net in the 86th minute. Less than a minute later, Tompkins made a spectacular diving save on a hard-driven shot from inside the box.

In the 89th minute, Sarah Kinzner forced a turnover near midfield and fed a long pass to Kornieck at the top of the box. After a defender failed to get a foot on the ball, Kornieck took possession and dribbled towards the left post and calmly shot the ball past WSU's goalkeeper at 88:41.

The Cougars were only able to get one shot off in the final minute.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: Kornieck's team-leading goal sixth goal of the season provided the difference, but Tompkins finished with seven saves, the second-most of her freshman season.

UP NEXT: CU will play at Arizona on Thursday and at Arizona State on Sunday next week. Thursday's match kicks off at 8 p.m. MT with a 4 p.m. start at ASU on Sunday. Both matches will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks.

NOTES: Kornieck's goal at 88:41 was the third-latest game-winning goal in school history, ahead of 88:50 by Darcy Jerman vs. Denver in 2014 and 89:06 by Suzy Kiefer at Wyoming in 2001 … Kornieck is the first CU freshman to score in a conference-opener since 2010 (Hayley Hughes and Lizzy Herzl in a 2-1 win over No. 6 Texas A&M when CU was in the Big 12) … Tompkins' five first-half saves were the most she has had at halftime of a match this season … the win snapped a 10-match conference winless streak in Pac-12 play for the Buffs … it was the first win for CU over Washington State since joining the Pac-12 in 2011 and the first win against WSU since 2010 as the Buffs are now 2-5 all-time against the Cougars.

Postgame Quotes
Danny Sanchez, head coach
On how the team performed
"Washington State's a very good team and we were under a lot of pressure. I felt we did a really good job of forcing most of their shots from distance. There were times that they did get in and break us down, but JJ was fantastic. She dealt with everything, especially with the wet conditions and balls skipping. She didn't give up rebounds. We are really pleased with what we did defensively against a very good Washington State team."

On Kornieck's goal
"We were under pressure and the game looked destined for overtime. But Sarah won the ball after a goal kick and got it inside and we had been having some success breaking their line and our forwards showed. Sarah played a nice ball and with the wet conditions, skipped through and Taylor was able to muscle the center back off and slotted home with composure and we just had a minute to kill after that."

On the 200th win in school history
"What it says is in the time since 1996 when Colorado soccer was established, it has been a successful program. We've had a lot of NCAA Tournament appearances, Sweet Sixteen appearances and a Big 12 championship. We feel that we are an established and successful program and we give credit to all of the players that used to play before us, back when they used to play at Pleasant View, and as we developed Prentup Field. As we continue to develop our program, we're excited to get this win, but this is really for those players that really got it going back in the mid-to-late '90s."

On the first half
"I think we started slow. I thought the last 15 minutes was better. Credit to Washington State. I think they came out well. Once we got up to speed, I think it was better towards the end. But we need more pressure in the final third. Two shots aren't going to get it done.

On the importance of a road win in the Pac-12
"Every game in the Pac-12 is like this, especially going on the road to a tough place where we hadn't had a lot of success, against a very good team. I think it's a great win for us, but like I told the team before the game, there's 11 of these and everyone is going to be like this. We'll enjoy this tonight, but when we get back tomorrow and get back to training on Sunday, it's all about Arizona and Arizona State next week on the road. We have to bring the same intensity and focus as we did this week."

Taylor Kornieck, freshman, midfielder
On the game-winning goal
"The grass was really skipping and when Sarah played me the ball, I kind of knew it was going to [skip]. I took a chance and I [got position] and I had the whole far post wide open so I just slotted it in. It felt pretty good. It's a good confidence booster because it's a great opportunity to beat anybody in the Pac-12."

On the play of Tompkins
"She's outstanding. I wasn't even worrying when they got balls close to JJ because she's really strong off the line. She's good with communication and she organizes the back line really well. I'm just really comfortable with her in the net."
