Buffs Take Six-Match Winning Streak To Arizona State

September 30, 2016 | Soccer

BOULDER - Colorado's soccer team will take a six-match winning streak to Arizona State on Sunday. The match will be televised on Pac-12 Mountain Network and kicks off at 4 p.m. MT at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. Complete notes are attached to the right in the PDF.

Notes:
Up Next
•    CU carries a six-match winning streak into Sunday's match at Arizona State.
•    CU plays at ASU at 4 p.m. MT on Sunday and the match will televised on Pac-12 Mountain Network.
•    Play-by-play will be handled by Matt McConnell, Danielle Slaton will do the color and Gregson Frampton will produce the show.
•    A win would give CU a seven-match winning streak, the longest since 2008.
•    It would also be a three-match winning streak in Pac-12 play, the second-longest for CU since joining the league in 2011 (longest is four from Oct. 31, 2014 to Sept. 27, 2015).

20th Anniversary, 200 Wins
•    2016 is the 20th anniverary of the first season of soccer at CU in 1996.
•    CU won its 200th match in school history on Sept. 23 with a 1-0 victory at Washington State.
•    The program currently has an all-time record of 200-176-43.

Best Pac-12 Start
•    For the first time since joining the Pac-12 in 2011, CU started conference play with a 2-0-0 record.
•    The Buffs will be looking to go 3-0-0 at Arizona State on Sunday.
•    The only other time CU started Pac-12 play with a win was in 2015 when the Buffs beat California 2-1 in overtime.

Freshman First
•    Taylor Kornieck became the first CU freshman ever to have back-to-back two-goal games when she scored twice (and had an assist) against Drexel and scored two more times against Hawai'i on Sept. 4 and 9.

Kornieck's Historic Performance
•    Taylor Kornieck had five points in a 5-0 win over Drexel and it was just the third time in CU history a freshman has recorded five points in a match.
•    Kornieck had two goals and one assist in the match.
•    Former USWNT player and current volunteer assistant Nikki Marshall is the only other Buff to have five points in a match as a freshman and she did it twice in 2006.

First Win In Pullman, 200th Win Ever
•    CU's 1-0 win at Washington State on Sept. 23 was big in several ways as it was the first-ever win for the Buffs in Pullman, Wash., and first win over WSU since joining the Pac-12 in 2011.
•    It was also the 200th win in school history.
•    It was also head coach Danny Sanchez's 50th win at CU.
•    Taylor Kornieck became the first freshman since 2010 to score in a conference opener (Hayley Hughes and Lizzy Herzl scored in a 2-1 win over No. 6 Texas A&M in 2010 when CU was in the Big 12).

Tompkins Earns Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week
•    Jalen Tompkins made seven saves in a 1-0 win at Washington State on Sept. 23 and was named Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week on Sept. 27.
•    With the match still scoreless in the 86th minute, Tompkins made a spectacular diving save on a shot from inside the box to keep WSU off the board and allow for Taylor Kornieck's game-winning goal just three minutes later.

Offense Breaks Out
•    After having several unlucky losses where CU outshot its opponents considerably and dominated possession, the offense broke out of its slump with a 5-0 win over Drexel on Sept. 4, converting five of its 26 shot attempts (14 on goal).
•    Taylor Kornieck (see note above) had the biggest performance, but Sarah Kinzner, Danica Evans and Stephanie Zuniga also got in the scoring column against the Dragons.
•    Heading into the Drexel match, CU has outshot its opponents 79-52 over the previous four matches, yet the team had been outscored 6-4.
•    Over the next three matches, CU outscored its opponents 12-2.

#SCtop10
•    Danica Evans and Taylor Kornieck came in at No. 2 on SportsCenter's Top 10 on Sept. 9 after an impressive goal in the third minute a 3-1 win over Hawai'i.
•    Evans used her traditional flip throw to throw the ball into play from the left sideline and Kornieck headed the throw into the far side of the net.

Newcomers Making an Impact
•    In 11 matches this season, newcomers have 10 of the team's 21 goals (48 percent), five assists (29 percent) and 101 shot attempts (52 percent), while combining for 39 starts.
•    Freshman Taylor Kornieck leads the team in most offensive categories, including goals, points and shot attempts (tied).
•    Additionally, redshirt freshman Jalen Tompkins has made nine starts and leads the goalkeepers with a 0.54 GAA and .891 save percentage, while posting an 8-2-0 record.
•    Kornieck and Tompkins rank among the nation's top freshmen:
