Buff Golfers Open 2016-17 Season In Ballyneal Challenge

September 06, 2016 | Men's Golf

BOULDER — The University of Colorado men's golf team will once again open the 2016-17 on the eastern plains in the state, hosting the three-team Ballyneal Challenge this Tuesday, Sept. 6.

The one-day tournament at Ballyneal Golf Club in Holyoke will feature 24 players from three schools – CU, Northern Colorado and Wyoming – with 36 holes scheduled throughout the day; it will be the standard "five scoring four" format.  All schools will have others play as individuals.

Colorado head coach Roy Edwards is beginning his 11th season as coach of the Buffaloes, and he after facing the challenge last year of blending four returning lettermen with five newcomers, this year's team is one of his most experienced yet still has some talented new blood in the mix.

Jeremy Paul, CU's stroke average leader the last three seasons, returns for his senior season; his 70.67 average as a junior set a school record and he's on track for several of the school's scoring records.  Two other seniors dot the roster, Ethan Freeman, who like, Paul, has earned three letters, and walk-on Ryan Schmitz.

Paul will be reunited with his identical twin, Yannik, who spent last year at home in his native Germany while considering turning professional.  He wound up remaining an amateur and has returned to CU for his junior year (the brothers have spent this past summer ranked among the top 125 amateurs in the world, and in the top five among Germans).

Two other juniors are on the roster, both of whom lettered after transferring to CU last year, Kade Crossland and John Souza.  CU's other returning lettermen are sophomores Wilson Belk and Ross Macdonald, both of whom played the most rounds (32) of all the newcomers a year ago.   Macdonald plans to redshirt this season and won't be in the lineup here.

Newcomers include a sophomore transfer from the University of Kansas, Spencer Painton, who has had a very good summer in several amateur events.  Add to the mix three true freshmen, Victor Bjorlow and Morten Toft Hansen, both of whom hail from Denmark, and Jack Li, who prepped at Great Oak High School in Temecula, Calif.; he moved to the states from China in the eighth grade.

"We are excited to get the year started. Beginning at Ballyneal has become a tradition and tends to be a good start to the fall," CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  "Basically the entire team plays and is a good indicator of where everyone is at with their games."

For the inaugural tournament of the year, Edwards will have Jeremy Paul, Freeman, Yannik Paul, Souza and Painton play the 1-through-5 positions to contribute to the team scoring, while the six remaining Buffaloes will play as individuals.

The Buffs lose three lettermen off last year's team, seniors Philip Juel-Berg and Drew Trujillo, and freshman Pierce Aichinger, who transferred to Colorado State.  Juel-Berg was also from Denmark and brought attention to the school for the two new Danes to follow in his footsteps.

The teams arrived here Monday morning for a practice round in the afternoon on the 7,137-yard, par-71 Ballyneal layout.  Following this meet, the Buffs will head to Colorado Springs to participate in the Air Force Falcon Invitational this weekend; 36 holes are scheduled for Saturday and 18 for Sunday.
