Buffs Open 2018 with Potts Invite

January 12, 2018 | Track and Field

BOULDER - The University of Colorado track and field program kicked off it's 2018 indoor season here Friday with the Potts Invitational. Freshman Gunner Rigsby highlighted the day winning the long jump event title.

WHAT HAPPENED
Freshman Gunner Rigsby took home the long jump title, the first of his career Friday evening. Rigsby landed his winning mark of 22-8.50/6.92 in his second try. His impressive PR of 24-0.25/7.32 came in December at the Mines Alumni Classic and Multi where he finished third. Teammate Dionne Taylor Jr. finished seventh in the long jump landing a 21-2/6.45.

In the high jump two Buffs finished in the top three with Michaela Wenning and Giancarlo Narvarte. On the women's side, Michaela Wenning cleared a 5-7.25/1.71 height to take third, while Giancarlo Narvarte finished third on the men's side with a height of 6-5/1.96.

Bri Gibbs is quickly finding her groove in the women's pole vault as she tied for second with a mark of 11-11.75/3.65. This is her second top two finish this season as she also took second in the pole vault event at the Mines Alumni Classic and Multi.

UP NEXT
The Buffs continue the 2018 Potts Invitational Saturday Jan. 13. Field events kick off at 10:00 with the men's shot put and women's triple jump, with track events starting at 1:00 with the 60 meter hurdles.

QUOTABLE : Assistant Coach Lindsey Malone
"We had some really great things happen. Gunner Rigsby winning the long jump was great especially as a freshman, he did his work over break and it paid off. Rajon and Michaela looked great in the women's high jump. They are close to something great!  Andrew Ghizzone attempted his PR in the pole vault tonight and nearly had it! For the jumpers portion of the day, I was quite pleased."

"Tomorrow I am excited to see our hurdles, for our for the multi's especially. We have new people that are coming back and will compete in the open hurdles and 800 instead of in a multi. We've had some good practices recently, so we'll see what they do!"
