Late Comeback Runs Out Of Time As Buffs Fall 62-53 At No. 17 Stanford
February 11, 2018 | Women's Basketball
BOULDER – No. 17/21 Stanford used an 18-2 run to close the first half and defeat Colorado 62-53 on Sunday at Maples Pavilion. CU dropped to 12-13 overall and 3-11 in the Pac-12, while the Cardinal moved to 18-8 and 12-2 in the Pac-12 with their sixth straight win.
CU made a late run to cut the final margin to single digits, but ran out of time in the fourth quarter.
STAT LEADERS: Quinessa Caylao-Do led the Buffs with 16 points and had five rebounds, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers. Kennedy Leonard had 12 points and three assists. Alexis Robinson added nine points.
Stanford's Brittany McPhee stole the headlines, however, scoring 25 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. She shot 9-for-14 from the floor.
HOW IT HAPPENED: CU used a 7-0 run late in the first quarter to take a 10-9 lead when Leonard scored on a steal and then hit the free throw after drawing the foul. The Cardinal ultimately took a 13-10 lead into the second quarter after two scores in the final minute.
The second quarter was back-and-forth for the first five minutes. Leonard knocked down a 3-pointer at the 7:29 mark to put CU in front 15-14 and Annika Jank hit a jumper with 5:31 left in the quarter for a 19-17 lead. That two-point lead would be the largest of the game for the Buffs and their final lead of the day.
McPhee took the game over late in the second quarter for Stanford, scoring 11 points during the Cardinal's 18-2 run to close the first half over the final 5:11 to lead 35-21 at the break.
Stanford stretched its lead to 50-33 after the third quarter, though Caylao-Do had a strong showing for the Buffs, scoring six of their 12 points in the quarter. She completed a 3-point play at the 3:40 mark with a layup and a free throw, and then buried a 3-pointer with 1:16 remaining.
CU kept battling throughout the fourth quarter. After trailing by 20 just two minutes into the fourth, the Buffs went on an 11-2 run to cut Stanford's lead to 12 at 56-44 with 3:22 left in the game.
Caylao-Do brought the Buffs within 11 at 60-49, burying a 3-pointer with 1:09 remaining. Carter made a layup with eight seconds left to bring the score to the final margin of nine.
KEY STATISTICS: In a defensive battle by both squads, the turnovers were even as each team forced 21. CU held Stanford to just 37.7 percent shooting, but shot 33.3 itself. The Cardinal held a 46-37 rebounding advantage.
The fouls ended up being the determining factor. CU was whistled for 28 fouls and Stanford took advantage, hitting 19-of-35 at the line. The Cardinal committed 18 fouls as CU made 7-of-12 free throws.
NOTES: Knight made her first start since Dec. 31 vs. Arizona ... Caylao-Do's 16 points were the most for her since scoring 18 at Samford in the season opener on Nov. 10 and the second-highest total of her career ... CU dropped to 4-18 al-time vs. Stanford as the Cardinal have now won 13 in a row in the series ... CU's 28 fouls were the most since committing 30 at Oregon on Feb. 14, 2016.
UP NEXT: The Buffs return home next weekend for their final two home games of the season. They host Washington at 7 p.m. on Friday and Washington State at noon on Sunday.

On the game
"They're a top-20 team in the country for a reason. They have great seniors. Our effort and our toughness to rebound, never give up, continue to press and get some and-1's late in the game—we never gave up in the game."
On the physicality of the game
"I think the competitiveness is great, but we have to learn to adjust to the way a game is being called. These were three good officials—they've done [NCAA] tournament games, so it's us being able to adjust to the way a game is being called. And if it's a game when a lot of fouls are being called, then we've got to take advantage that the same way Stanford was taking advantage of that."
On Quinessa Caylao-Do's game
"It was great. Her family is here, her high school coach is here and she did a great job of being aggressive from beginning to end. She's been getting a lot of shots up [in the gym] and it showed today."
On Aubrey Knight earning the start
"Aubrey plays so hard. Her effort on the glass was great and it was what we wanted out of her. She's going to be a great player for us."
On not giving up when the team got down after Stanford's runs
"We were down by 20 and we could've easily bent over and died, but we didn't. Players came in and they were aggressive. They had the never-give-up mentality.
