Shymka Scores Twice, Baucom Once In Spring Opener
March 12, 2018 | Soccer
BOULDER – Colorado's soccer team kicked off the 2018 spring season on Saturday with a game at Colorado College. The Buffs took home a 3-1 victory in the first of six exhibitions this spring.
The two teams played three 30-minute periods and head coach Danny Sanchez split up the playing time evenly among his 20 healthy players. CU was led by junior-to-be Camilla Shymka, who had a pair of goals. Jorian Baucom added the other score, and Megan Massey, Erin Greening and Marty Puketapu each had an assist.
"I thought the first 30 minutes we had a hard time clicking," Sanchez said. "We played everybody equal minutes so it was kind of hard to find a cohesion. The second 30 minutes, we became more comfortable—not just because we scored goals. I thought we moved the ball better. I thought we had more flow into what we were doing. The third 30 minutes, I actually thought was our best stretch. I thought we took control of the match although we gave up a goal. It was a good goal. I felt from the run of play, we started playing better."
Sanchez split his two goalkeepers in Scout Watson and Jalen Tompkins, with Watson earning the start. He noted both players played well, highlighting a key stop that Watson made in the first 30 minutes. Defensively, he was also impressed with the play of Hannah Cardenas, who just returned to the team after a stint with the U-19 USWNT in Spain, and Greening and Kelsey Aaknes.
"I thought Hannah Cardenas, although they she has missed some time, I thought she did very well in the back," Sanchez said. "I felt Scout in the first 30 minutes made a great save to keep it scoreless. I thought her and JJ both did very well in goal. I thought Erin had a nice assist and defended well. Her and Kelsey were very good in the back and in the midfield."
In the midfield, Sarah Kinzner and Taylor Kornieck had strong showings despite not showing up in the scoring statistics. Kinzner played several different midfield positions throughout the game.
"We played Sarah in a lot of different spots so I thought she had a good performance," Sanchez said. "Megan [Massey] had a nice assist. Taylor played very well—probably a little unfortunate not to get a goal."
Up top, Shymka and Baucom scored the goals, but Katie Joella also impressed Sanchez with her performance.
"Obviously Cam getting two goals [was great]," Sanchez said. "I thought she really came on, especially in the second 30 minutes, and played well. I thought Katie Joella as well. Although she didn't score, she is very dangerous going forward. There were a lot of good performances by a lot of good players but a lot a stuff to work on."
The match was a breakout showing for Shymka, who has scored two goals in two seasons with the Buffs. The Calgary native was coming on strong during her freshman season with a goal and two assists early in 2016 before tearing her right ACL and missing the remainder of the year and the entire offseason leading up to 2017. She had one goal as a sophomore in 20 appearances. Her performance Saturday was similar to what she showed prior to her injury during her freshman season.
"I thought it was a good performance by Cam," Sanchez said. "She started a little slow, like most of the team did, in the first 30 minutes. In the second 30, Megan [Massey] gave her a nice assist on the first one. On the second goal, [F] Marty [Puketapu] played a cross. Stephanie Zuniga let it run and she finished that one. It was a good performance for her and her confidence. I thought she really came to the game as it was going."
Baucom also scored a goal on Saturday after recovering from a knee injury. The transfer from LSU was a first-team All-SEC performer, scoring 33 goals in three seasons, but suffered an injury prior to transferring to CU and missed the 2017 season recovering from that setback.
"I am sure she was excited," Sanchez said. "It has been a while since she has played. It was good for her to get out there and run around a little bit with the group. [The goal] was a very good run for Erin [Greening]. From her outside-back position, she played a really nice ball and Jorian finished it one time. [Jorian] also worked hard to hold the ball up for us. It was a good performance for her first time playing with us."
"Overall, I am pleased to get all healthy players good playing time," Sanchez said of Saturday's match. "Everybody got at least 45 minutes. It was good to get Stephanie [Zuniga] back after missing last year, Jorian [Baucom] as well. So it was good for them to get out and get their feet wet a little bit and to get some minutes. I thought it was a good start to spring. Obviously it also showed a lot of things we need to work on."
CU will be back in action on Sunday, April 8 at 3 p.m. vs. Northern Colorado at Prentup Field.
