No. 15 Colorado’s Offense Explodes In First Meeting Against ASU

TEMPE, Ariz. – In the first ever meeting between the Arizona State and Colorado lacrosse teams, it was the 15th-ranked Buffaloes who came away with the victory, downing the Sun Devils 18-2 on Sunday afternoon.
Junior Miranda Stinson led the Buffs with six points, four goals and two assists, while senior Carly Cox and freshman Sadie Grozier each recorded a hat-trick with three goals.
CU improved to 6-3 overall with the victory and is now 3-1 in the Pac-12, while ASU is 5-4 overall (0-3 Pac-12).
WHAT HAPPENED: Samantha Nemirov got the Buffs on the board just 50 seconds into the game. Stinson (25:48), Grozier (21:23) and Cox (20:49) also scored in the first 10 minutes to give the Buffs a nice 4-0 advantage.
Stinson, who assisted on Cox's first goal, tallied her second marker of the day just 47 seconds after Cox's goal, give CU a 5-0 lead and causing the Sun Devils to take their first timeout.
The Buffs attack did not let up. Nemirov earned her second of the day at 18:27, while Darby Kiernan found the back of the net just over a minute later. Stinson's marker at 12:43 was her third of the day and put the Buffs up 8-0. Just 20 seconds later, Anna Collawn recorded her first goal of the day, with the helper credited to Kiernan.
The Buffs got a running clock with 3:49 left in the first half with Cox's second goal of the game off a pass from Sophie Castillo and they held that advantage heading into halftime (10-0).
Arizona State finally found the back of the net near the start of the second frame as Kerri Clayton recorded her 29th goal of the season at 29:12 (10-1). But just a short time later (28:50), Jen Mistretta earned her first goal of the game off a pass from Cox, and again the Buffs had a running clock.
The scoring kept coming from the Buffs. Stinson earned her fourth of the afternoon at 25:33 and Cox added her third at 22:53 (with the assist from Stinson again), giving CU a 13-1 lead.
After Castillo scored her first of the game (20:23), ASU called its second timeout down 14-1. The Buffs won the ensuing draw control and Grozier would go on to tally her second goal of the day at 18:11.
Castillo and Grozier each scored again before the Sun Devils tallied their second goal of the game at 6:15 (17-2). Colorado closed out the game with Madi Wifall's first career goal at 1:28, giving the Buffs the 18-2 victory.
KEY STATS: The Buffaloes outshot the Sun Devils 41-14, which included a 27-5 edge in the first half. CU also led in ground balls (24-14) and draw controls (12-10). The Buffs cleared on all but two attempts (17-19), while ASU cleared on 10-of-15 attempts. The Buffs also converted on 3-of-7 free-position attempts and the Sun Devils did not convert on their one try. ASU had 17 turnovers in the game compared to 10 for the Buffs.
DEFENSE: Colorado allowed ASU to put just 11 shots on goal and Julia Lisella stopped nine of them for an impressive .818 save percentage. The Buffs played much of the game on the offensive end, but when their defense played, they came up with some big stops. Kelsie Garrison and Sarah Brown each had three caused turnovers, while Miranda Stinson, Darby Kiernan and Jen Mistretta added one each.

The last time CU did so was against UC Davis. The Aggies scored three goals in the first half, but did not find the back of the net in the second half. The Buffs won the game 14-3.
