Nemirov’s Strong Second Half Propels CU Past Oregon

March 23, 2018 | Lacrosse

EUGENE, Ore. – Down 7-6 early in the second half, the 15th-ranked Colorado Buffaloes recorded an 8-2 run to defeat Oregon, 14-9, on Friday night at Pape' Field.

Junior Samantha Nemirov was responsible for five of those eight second-half goals, propelling the Buffs to their fourth win in Pac-12 play.  The Buffs are now 7-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play.  The Ducks dropped to 4-4 overall and are 2-3 in league competition.

WHAT HAPPENED: Nemirov scored the first goal of the game at 25:25 with the assist going to Miranda Stinson.  Shortly after that, Stinson scored her first of the game at 24:53.  Darby Kiernan put the Buffs up 3-0 with an unassisted goal at 24:00.

Oregon got on the board a short time after Stinson was issued a yellow card.  Natalie Modly converted on a free-position attempt almost 30 seconds later at 22:09.  The Ducks tallied another marker just over a minute later to bring the score within one (3-2).

Stinson earned her second goal of the game at 14:48 to give the Buffs a two-goal advantage, but that did not last long as UO scored again at 12:55.  CU's Olivia Aschman was issued a yellow card with under 10 minutes left in the half and again the Ducks were able to score on the woman-advantage to even the game.  One minute later, Oregon took its first lead of the game (5-4).

The Buffs did not let up and continued to attack.  The work paid off as Stinson scored her third of the day with just over five minutes remaining in the half.  Oregon scored another woman-up goal at 1:12 to retake the lead (6-5) after CU's Kelsie Garrison was issued the Buffs' third yellow card of the game.

But the Buffs were able to even it up at 6-6 with 11 second left in the frame as Kiernan found the back of the net for the 173rd time in her career, making her the CU career leader.

The second half started with UO scoring at 27:49 to regain the lead (7-6), but the Buffs responded with Nemirov's second marker of the day at 26:02.  Nemirov earned her fifth hat-trick of the season with the following CU goal at 19:56 and less than a minute later, Carly Cox recorded her first goal of the game to give the Buffs a two-goal advantage (9-7).

Oregon was issued a pair of yellow cards within seconds of each other (13:17 and 13:01).  Nemirov scored her first woman-up goal of the game at 12:47.  CU continued on the player advantage and Nemirov scored her second woman-up goal at 11:35 to give the Buffs an 11-7 edge in the game.

Kiernan scored the Buffs third man-up goal of the game with 5:48 remaining in the game, which gave CU a comfortable 12-7 lead.  Her woman-up goal, combined with Nemirov's two, totaled the second most CU man-up goals in a single game.

The Ducks ended CU's 6-0 run at 4:55, but at 4:16, Nemirov scored her sixth goal of the game, which tied her for the second most goals in a single game for the Buffs.  Anna Collawn recorded the final marker for CU at 2:15 before UO tallied the final marker of the contest with 1:57 left.

KEY STATS: The Buffaloes outshot the Ducks 41-20 and had the edge in draw controls, 15-10.  Both teams recorded 11 ground balls and 14 turnovers.  Colorado converted on three of its 10 free-position attempts, while Oregon was 1-of-4.  Both teams scored three woman-up goals.  In total there were seven yellow cards issued in the game, three for CU and four for UO.

NOTABLE:
  • Sarah Brown became the CU career caused turnover leader in the game with her 72nd.
  • CU has scored 14 or more goals in each of their four Pac-12 wins.
  • Three Buffs have scored at least one point in every game this season: Samantha Nemirov, Darby Kiernan and Miranda Stinson.
  • Kiernan, who is already the CU career lead in points, became the CU career goals leader, scoring the 173rd goal of her career to surpass Johnna Fusco's mark of 172.
  • Oregon converted on all three of CU's yellow cards.
  • For the seventh time in CU single-game history, a Buff recorded two woman-up goals as Nemirov scored a pair in the second half. Nemirov is just the fourth Buffs to record the feat.

UP NEXT: Colorado will play its final non-conference regular season game against Denver on Thursday, March 29, at Peter Barton Stadium in Denver, Colo.

QUOTEABLE:
Head Coach Ann Elliott
"Obviously this was not our prettiest game, but I was proud of our second half effort and the fight we showed. We have to do a better job in the start of the game executing on both ends of the field. I thought that in the second half we did a better job of executing, limiting unforced turnovers and causing some turnovers. Overall, every conference game is so important. This is a very well coached Oregon team, so we are happy to be leaving Eugene with a win. And we will look to get refocused and start preparing for Denver before we head into second half of Pac-12 play."
