No. 49 Huskies Top Buffs In Seattle
March 30, 2018 | Tennis
SEATTLE – Colorado's tennis team suffered a 4-0 loss to 49th-ranked Washington on Friday afternoon indoors at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Buffs, who had 13 days without competition since their last match due to a rainout and a bye week in the schedule, dropped to 8-6 overall and 1-3 in the Pac-12. UW improved to 11-8 and 1-3.
DOUBLES: The Huskies breezed through doubles, a surprising result for the Buffs, who had previously lost the doubles point just twice all season. UW's Stacey Fung and Katarina Kopcalic won 6-1 over Louise Ronaldson and Kyra Wojcik at the No. 3 position, while the 32nd-ranked duo of Miki Kobayashi and Vanessa Wong took down Brigitte Beck and Chloe Hule 6-1 at No. 1 just minutes later to secure the point.
SINGLES: Kobayashi carried her momentum from doubles into singles, defeating CU's Jeannez Daniel 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 to give Washington a 2-0 lead in the match.
Fung, ranked No. 16 in the country, showed her strength at No. 1 singles and gave UW its third point of the match. She won 6-2, 6-0 over Linda Huang.
The Huskies clinched their win at No. 2 singles. Vanessa Wong, the 61st-ranked player in the country, took down Chloe Hule 6-3, 6-3. Hule came out strong, leading 3-2 in the first set before Wong took the final four games. Hule battled late in the second set. Trailing 5-1, she won two straight games before succumbing to Wong.
All three unfinished matches were tight, particularly through the first set. At No. 4 singles, Ronaldson lost her first set 7-5 and was 3-3 in the second when the Huskies clinched the match to end the competition. She led 3-0 in the first before Alexis Prokopuik took four straight games. The two then traded games before Prokopuik prevented a tiebreaker with the late win. The two split the first six sets of the second set as well.
Wojcik held a 4-2 lead in the first before dropping it 7-5, and then trailed 4-0 in the second set to Kenadi Hance at the No. 5 spot.
At No. 6 singles, Beck jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first against Kopcalic, going up a break. She led 4-3 after winning three of four deuce points in the set, but Kopcalic rallied to win the next three games for a 6-4 victory. Kopcalic then led 4-0 when play was stopped in the second.
NOTES: CU dropped the doubles point for just the third time this season and is now 10-3 in doubles points on the year ... Huang dropped to 1-6 vs. nationally-ranked opponents ... as a team, CU is now 0-3 vs. nationally-ranked opponents ... CU suffered its fourth straight loss after opening the season 8-2 ... it was just the second time this season the Buffs have been shut out (7-0 at No. 30 Wichita State on Feb. 25).
UP NEXT: The Buffs will take on No. 31 Washington State at 11 a.m. MT in Pullman.

On the match and looking ahead to Sunday
"Washington came out and took charge early and got that doubles point. It's not that we weren't competing or ready, but they got off to a better start than us. It's so hard because so many times singles-wise we're competing. We've got people fighting. In the matches that were not finished, we definitely had our shots, but they really played better than us a Nos. 1, 2 and 3. If a couple things don't go their way, we're right there in this match. It's just an example of home-court advantage. We'll keep our heads high and we've been resilient all year and we'll continue to be. We've got Washington State and another tough one on their home courts on Sunday and we'll be getting ready for that one."
