Fan in First, Buffs in Second at Meadow Club Women’s Collegiate

March 05, 2018 | Women's Golf

FAIRFAX, Calif. – Senior Brittany Fan of Colorado women's golf team holds the top spot on the individual leader board after one round here Monday in the Meadow Club Women's Collegiate. As a team, the Buffaloes shot a 291 and are tied for second place.

The tournament, originally slated for 54 holes was reduced to 36 due to weather. Teams played their first 18 holes on Monday after a frost delay and will finish the final round on Tuesday. CU entered Monday ranked No. 19 in the latest GolfStat poll and are tied with San Francisco in second place. Both teams are eight strokes behind No. 15 ranked Washington who currently sits atop the leader board at 5-under par 283. CU and San Francisco shot a 3-over 291 while Oregon State is in fourth at 6-over par, 294. Illinois rounds out the top-five teams at 7-over par, 295.

"It was not our best day," head coach Anne Kelly said. "But Brittany's round really saved us along with Robyn. Kirsty just had a plain old bad day, but she will bounce back. Elle, in her first event was really close to a good round but had a tough finish. Hopefully we can get everyone going tomorrow and see what happens."

Senior Brittany Fan is in prime position to earn medalist honors as she is tied for first place after posting a field-best 5-under par 67. This marks Fan's best career round at CU as her previous best round was a 68 from the Silverado Showdown last season. Fan was consistent throughout the day starting off strong from hole No. 1 where she carded a birdie to start 1-under. Through Fan's front nine she collected one bogey against four birdies to start her day at 3-under par. After posting a bogey on hole No. 13, Fan bounced back and closed out the day draining back-to-back birdies to finish her back nine at 2-under par.

Two Buffs finished the day under par, Brittany Fan and Robyn Choi, who is tied for fourth place at 2-under par, 70. Starting on hole No. 2, Choi was very consistent throughout the day finishing the front nine at even par with just one birdie against one bogey, and continued through the back nine carding two birdies on holes No. 15 and 18 to finish at 2-under par. Choi Collected 14 pars on the day, third most in the field.

Two freshman competed Monday, including Alisha Lau who is tied for 34th place. Lau carded a 3-over par, 75 on the day. She posted four bogeys and one birdie on hole No. 17.

Freshman Elle Otten made her debut for CU as she is tied for 60th place at 7-over par, 79. Otten birdied her first hole of the day, No. 4 and added another on hole No. nine. She added five bogeys and two doubles.

Kirsty Hodgkins struggled in the first round on Monday as the sophomore is tied for 82nd place with a 10-over par, 82. Hodgkins started the day on hole No. 1 and finished the front nine at 6-over par and went on to close out the back nine at 4-over par.

Buffs will be back in action Tuesday with fixed tee times beginning at 10:00 am MT.
