Kiernan Named IWLCA Offensive Player Of The Week

April 18, 2018 | Lacrosse

BOULDER — For the second time in as many weeks, a Colorado Buffalo has been named an Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Player of the Week.  Darby Kiernan was selected the IWLCA Offensive Player of the Week after recording 12 points in Colorado's two wins last week which helped the Buffs clinch a share of the inaugural Pac-12 regular season Championship.

Kiernan led the Buffs with 12 points, 10 goals and two assists, and had 12 draw controls last week. In the 11-10 overtime thriller against Stanford on April 13, Kiernan led both teams with eight draw controls and added two goals.

She had a career-day against California on April 15, with 10 points to set a CU single-game record. She scored seven goals, which tied a CU single-game record, and added three assists. She also set the CU career assist record in the game, passing the former record of 64; she currently has 67. Kiernan was 4-7 from the free-position arc and eight of her 10 shots were on goal against the Bears.

This is the first IWLCA Player of the Week honor for Kiernan, although she is not a stranger to national player of the week awards. Earlier this season, she was named the Brine/US Lacrosse and Alpha Lacrosse National Player of the Week (March 12). In 2017, Kiernan was tabbed the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week (Feb. 22).

In total, CU has had an athlete earn an IWLCA Player of the Week award three times in the last two years. The other two winners have been Sarah Brown (April 11, 2018) and Miranda Stinson (March 15, 2017).
