Heptathletes and Decathletes Finish Up Their Competition in Azusa with Impressive Point Totals
BOULDER – The Colorado track & field decathletes and heptathletes finished their competition in Azusa late on Thursday night. The Buffs completed the two-day competition with a few personal bests and impressive final scores.
Junior Maja Wichhart-Donzo had a great two days in Azusa. She came away from day one with three event personal records as well as an overall point personal record. On Thursday, she set a PR in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:16.70. "She jumped up to number 3 all time in the 800 meters, She is No. 4 all time for the Buffs. The last time for that to happen was Abrianna Torres several years ago, she was an amazing athlete herself and went to the NCAA championships. Maja has done a tremendous job, she is ranked in the pac-12 in scoring range now in the heptathlon, and in triple jump, and high jump," Assistant Coach Lindsey Malone told me.
Not far behind Wichhart-Donzo was Michaela Wenning. Wenning's day one point total was a great personal record for her, and she went on to set a few more during her events on day two. "Both Maja and Michaela PR'd by over 300 points. Those are two very solid scores going into Pac-12's. We are looking to improve upon those scores of course at Pac-12's, but going into Pac-12's this gives us a really good confidence boost that things are going in the right direction, and I think these women can see themselves at the NCAA level now which is pretty exciting," Malone said.
For the men, Andrew Ghizzone had a great two days in Azusa. He finished his first day with a personal record point total of 3692. He finished first in his group in the men's 1500-meter run with a time of 4:25.24. "On the men's side we also had some pretty impressive things happen. [Andrew] finished off the day doing a tremendous job winning the 1500 out of that really elite section, getting a lifetime PR. He is a very consistent performer, and that's one of the things that you want the most in the multi, is that they can go out and consistently perform," Malone said. He finished out the competition with a total point score of 7083, placing him ninth in his group.
"Overall I am very impressed with the team they have done a great job, I am really excited for the Pac-12 Championships for combined events," Malone said.
Up next for the Buffs is the running and field events in Azusa as well as the Cardinal Classic in Stanford.
