Seniors And Beck Lead Buffs To First Win Over Utah On Senior Day
April 21, 2018 | Tennis
BOULDER – Colorado's three seniors led the Buffs to a 4-3 win over Utah on Saturday on Senior Day at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center. CU improved to 9-11 overall and 2-7 in the Pac-12, while snapping a nine-match losing streak. Utah dropped to 10-13 overall and 1-9.
It was CU's first win over Utah since joining the Pac-12 Conference.
Seniors Louise Ronaldson and Kyra Wojcik combined for one of the team's doubles wins, while Ronaldson and Jeannez Daniel each had key singles victories on Saturday in the final home match for the three players.
DOUBLES: The Buffs cruised to the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Brigitte Beck and Chloe Hule upset the 65th-ranked doubles duo of Jena Cheng and Alexia Petrovic 6-0 at the top position. CU trailed 40-love in the final game before rallying with four straight points to clinch the sweep in just 24 minutes.
CU later clinched the doubles point at No. 3 as Ronaldson and Wojcik rallied from down a break late in the set for a 6-4 victory over Brianna Chisholm and Victoria Robertson. Ronaldson's serve was broken to give Utah a 4-3 lead, but the Buffs then took the next three games to earn the win.
SINGLES: Utah went up 2-1 less than two hours into the contest that lasted 4 hours and 26 minutes, with wins at No. 2 and No. 1 singles, respectively. At No. 2, Chisholm breezed to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Hule. Chisholm won the final four games of the first set and jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second.
At No. 1 singles, Petrovic defeated Linda Huang 6-2, 6-2. Petrovic also used strong starts, leading 5-1 in the first set and 4-1 in the second.
Jeannez Daniel evened up the match 2-2 after she topped Cheng 6-4, 7-6 (2) at No. 3 singles. Neither player took control at any point in either set. Tied 4-4, Daniel won the final two games in the first set to earn the victory. Both players held serve through the first eight games of the second when the momentum shifted as neither player held serve in the final four games, sending the set into a tiebreaker. Cheng won the first point before Daniel won five straight, and then Daniel ended the match with an ace for a 7-2 tiebreaker victory.
Ronaldson put CU up 3-2 with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win over Taylor Calton at No. 4 singles. After a dominating first set by Ronaldson, it was back-and-forth for the remainder of the match. In the third set, Calton led 3-2 before Ronaldson won the next three games. After Calton held serve with a 5-3 deficit, Ronaldson took the final game to close out the match.
The Utes evened things up at No. 5 singles as Whitney Turley edged Wojcik 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3. Wojcik breezed through the first set, leading 5-1 before splitting the final two sets. Turley jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the second before Wojcik evened things up at 4-4 as the two went on to a tiebreaker. In the final frame, Turley took a 5-2 lead before earning her 6-3 victory.
It came down to the No. 6 singles match where Beck pulled out a 7-5, 6-4 win over Robertson. Beck pulled away late to win the first set and then jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second. Robertson fought off match point five times in the second set before succumbing to Beck 6-4.
NOTES: It was the first win over Utah since CU joined the Pac-12 in 2011-12 ... CU's two Pac-12 wins this season are tied for the most since joining the conference (the Buffs went 2-8 in 2013 and 2016) ... the Buffs earned the double point for the 11th time this season (currently an 11-8 record on the doubles point), the most since finishing the 2012 season 12-12 in the doubles point ... CU had lost the doubles point in six consecutive matches heading into Saturday ... CU snapped a nine-match losing streak overall ... Beck earned her fourth career clinching win and second this season ... Daniel snapped a seven-match losing streak with her win, meanwhile Ronaldson has won five of her past seven matches ... the win by Beck and Hule at No. 1 doubles was CU's first win over a ranked doubles team this season.
UP NEXT: CU will play in the Pac-12 Tournament next week in Ojai, Calif. The first round begins on Wednesday, April 25.
POSTMATCH QUOTES:
Nicole Kenneally, head coach
On ending Pac-12 play with a win
"It feels great. Coming into this week, I let the girls know that they had the opportunity to be the first team within our Pac-12 history of beating Utah. It was great to have them at home. We talked about needing nine positions and we had some girls really step up in the singles.
On the doubles play
"Chloe and B came out right on. In this facility, if you get the first strike in, you're going to be in pretty good position. They did a great job. It's great for [Ronaldson and Wojcik] to close out that doubles point on Senior Day, with a lot of people here, a lot of energy.
On singles play
"At a moment, I thought, 'how cool would this be if the three seniors finished this off for us.' That would be a perfect, storybook ending. But as we know, life is not a storybook. We definitely had some moments of adversity in there on different courts and we handled ourselves well."
On the win for Beck to clinch the team's win
"All Pac-12 season, we've been competitive with a lot of teams. We've had a couple of blowouts, but we've been really competitive with a lot of teams. For her to step up in that situation and actually close it, was great, because we've had those opportunities and hadn't closed it. In those moments, it's real easy to look around, but today overall, B and everyone took accountability for their court and their actions. You have to compete and we continued to compete today. I'm proud of B. That was probably one of the best matches she's played in her college career."
Louise Ronaldson, senior
On getting a win on senior day
"I feel so proud that I could do this with my team. There's something about winning your last college match that can't be beat."
On contributing to the doubles point win
"We came out with so much energy and no matter how well they played, we just believed deep down that we'd win. We just wanted to do it for the team and that just made it so much nicer."
On her singles win
"My match, it was topsy-turvy. It went three sets, she played so well, and I just battled every single point. I felt like it could've gone either way, but I just dug in deep. So to come out on top, it was so special."
Jeannez Daniel, senior
On getting a win on senior day
"It's been a tough season and to finish it off with a win against Utah, it just makes it feel that much better."
On her singles win
"Even by my score, you could tell it was a tight match. I feel like I just really wanted to win today, maybe a little bit more than she did, so I was able to make it happen on the points that I needed to make it happen. It feels good to come out with a 'W' today."
Kyra Wojcik, senior
On getting a win on senior day
"My four years here, never beating Utah, it just feels so special with my teammates that I love so much. It's been such a great finale."
On contributing to the doubles point win
"We had a couple of tough losses before this. I was a little sick, wasn't feeling great, but I was like, 'I'm going to push through it,' because I'm trying to carry this team to a win. I'm glad I could contribute in doubles."
