Oleynik Picks Up Win, But Buffs Fall In First Round Of Pac-12 Championships
April 25, 2018 | Tennis
OJAI, CALIF.— The season for Colorado's women's tennis team came to a close on Wednesday in the first round of the Pac-12 Championships here at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club as the Buffaloes fell to the No. 43 Washington Huskies, 4-1. It was the second straight year the Huskies eliminated the Buffs in the first round of the Pac-12 Championships.
With the win, UW (16-10, 6-5 Pac-12) will advance to the quarterfinals to take on the top-seeded Stanford Cardinal, while CU finished the season at 9-12 (2-8 Pac-12).
What Happened: Washington started out strong in doubles play to open the match. On court No. 1, the 28th-ranked pairing of Miki Kobayashi and Vanessa Wong for the Huskies made quick work of the duo of junior Brigitte Beck and sophomore Chloe Hule with a 6-2 win. Beck and Hule were a solid pairing all season long, though, finishing with an 11-6 doubles record that included a nine-match win streak to start the season.
The Buffs rebounded on court No. 3 with the duo of freshman Linda Huang and junior Ilana Oleynik picking up a 6-3 win over the Huskies' Angela Li and Alexis Prokopuik.
The tie breaker was broken in the No. 2 doubles match as UW's Stacey Fung and Katarina Kopcalic defeated seniors Louise Ronaldson and Kyra Wojcik, 6-2.
Washington continued its winning ways as the match moved to singles competition.
The Huskies jumped out to a 3-0 lead after Ronaldson fell to Kobayashi, 6-0, 6-1, on court No. 3 and Kopcalic took down Beck, 6-1, 6-2, in the No. 5 singles match.
Colorado rebounded, though, as Oleynik breezed to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Li on court No. 6 to notch the score at 3-1.
However, the match was clinched in the No. 4 singles matchup as Prokopuik defeated Wojcik 6-0, 7-5.
Before the match was won, Hule held a 6-4, 4-2 lead over the No. 50-ranked Wong on court No. 2 and in the No. 1 singles match, Huang trailed 15th-ranked Fung, 6-3, 5-2.
NOTES: Oleynik's win was the first point in a Pac-12 Championship since the format was changed to team-scoring a year ago…Oleynik's win also snapped her own four-match losing streak in singles play… CU won the doubles point in 11 of 20 matches this season...CU is now 3-14 all-time vs. Washington and 0-8 since joining the Pac-12.

On the team's play overall
"I think everyone was ready to play. I think everyone was at their best, and the best they were going to be. I think in doubles we came out, and we definitely learned from our first match against Washington. I think we made some adjustments. Obviously Linda [Huang] and Ilana [Oleynik] did great at three. But we just didn't have enough in the tank at one and two. I think we put forth a valiant effort singles wise. Linda was down a set, down 5-2 at the first. We had our opportunities most definitely. You would hope that she would have been able to rebound a little bit. Chloe [Hule] was doing a great job in her match. Kyra [Wojcik] had a tough first set, but really competed hard in the second set. There were moments when you would get a few things going your way and you had to get right back in it. Washington did a good job when the opportunity was there to close. They did close it, and obviously Ilana got the win at six which was good. It was competitive. We were out there trying our hardest, doing our best, working hard, and representing well. But Washington just had a little bit more than us."
On Ilana Oleynik
"I think Ilana played a smart match knowing that she hadn't necessarily competed in singles for a while. She just played steady, but also played aggressive, played percentages, and looked for opportunities when they were there."
On how freshman Linda Huang and sophomore Chloe Hule played in a tough environment
"It would have been nice to have them win, but in this format you play clinch-clinch, so there is a little bit of a motivation to get finished if you are up. If you want the W you have to finish. Chloe was playing really smart, mature tennis. Linda was putting herself in position, but couldn't quite get over the hump in getting herself ahead in the match. But again, she was definitely competing better than the first time they played each other."
