May 13, 2018 | Track and Field
Colorado's track and field team finished the weekend with impressive scores
PALO ALTO, Calif. – The University of Colorado's track and field teams ended the weekend at the Pac-12 Championships on a great note here Sunday, as the women finished fourth overall and the men fifth.
Both finishes were the second-best in by each team in the seven years since CU joined the Pac-12 back in 2011. USC won the women's title with 170 points, while Oregon claimed the men's crown with 174; the CU women scored 76 points, while the men had 72.
"We did a little better on both genders than I expected to," Head Coach Mark Wetmore said. "We outran my projections by maybe 20 points on each side, so a good day for us. We got points from a lot of different event areas, which is the only way you can be successful here, you can't be a one dimensional team."
Eriana Henderson, Tashay Brown, Alexandria Peters and Rajon O'Quinn raced the women's 4x100-meter relay and brought home third place, clocking in at 45.49. This is the second time in three years the Buffs have earned all-conference honors, and both Peters and Brown were on both relay teams.
Gabby Scott recorded a personal best in the women's 400-meter hurdles and earned second place, finishing in 58.27. "A huge run for Gabby to get second, her fastest time ever, and Eriana not far behind her. And then finally we scored in all four relays, so maybe we are becoming a sprint and hurdle powerhouse," Wetmore said, in also crediting assistant coach Burke Bockman. "Good job, Coach Bockman!," he exclaimed.
Also on the women's side was an impressive finish in the 800-meter run. "Elissa Mann had a great 800-meter race, finished in fifth place, fastest time ever for her. She recorded a PR in difficult conditions," Wetmore said. Mann finished the race in 2:05.23.
After their impressive races yesterday, Erin Clark, Sage Hurta and Makena Morley earned third, fourth and seventh place respectively in the women's 5,000-meters, adding 13 points to the women's score for the weekend.
"The distance runners did what they're supposed to do," Wetmore said. "They had a really big end to the meet with the 5k, Erin scored 12 points for the team, Sage was fourth in the 5k and our top scorer for the weekend with 15 points for the weekend. Makena had a busy weekend running 15 kilometers of hard work."
Grayson Webber achieved a lifetime best in the men's hammer throw today, recording a distance of 53.55 meters. The men also took home first and second place in the 5,000-meter run, with Ben Saarel earning first place and clocking in at 14:11.23 and teammate Zach Perrin coming in close behind him in second at 14:12.07.
"Zach Perrin, 15 kilometers of hard work this weekend, ended up second in the 5k, coupled with his 10k points he's our men's team high point scorer with 12 points. And the winner of the 5,000, Ben Saarel, it was really exciting. He's had some curious interruptions this season but he executed the race excellently, closed brilliantly," Wetmore said of his top men's distance runners. "I think it's his first Pac-12 conference championship in his time here. And within minutes he was also announced as the Pac-12 men's track and field scholar athlete of the year. So great job for Ben."
"All in all, very pleased with how both teams, great efforts on both sides," Wetmore said.
The finishes were next to last year's efforts of third by the women and fourth by the men as CU continues to settle in as a member of the Pac-12, one of the nation's premier track and field conferences.
