February 29, 2020 | General, Men's Basketball, Skiing
BOULDER - This week's CU Athlete of the Week award goes to both McKinley Wright IV, of men's basketball, and Mikaela Tommy, of women's skiing.
Â
On the men's side, McKinley Wright averaged 17.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists in a split against USC & UCLA last week. The Junior led Colorado in scoring in both games. Wright had 15 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds against USC. The star had 20 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists vs. UCLA. Finally, Wright had the 15th 20-point game of his career (fourth this season); with 1,298 career points. He has now cracked CU's top 20 all-time and ended the day in 19th.
Â
Switching things over to the women's side of the award, Mikaela Tommy won the giant slalom race and took third in the slalom race at the Utah Invitational in Park City. The skiing standout has won every giant slalom races this season, four to date, and tied the CU record for most GS wins in a season and broke the record for most career GS wins (seven) for a women's alpine skier. Tommy's four consecutive GS wins sets a new CU record and matches the overall record for women's alpine, now shared with Lucie Zikova, who won four straight slalom races spanning 2006-07. She clinched the top GS seed for the NCAA Championships with her fourth seed. With her third place slalom performance, she has hit the podium in every race she's finished this season, seven of nine to date.  She's just the sixth women's alpine skier in CU history with seven or more podium appearances in one season and she still has up to five races remaining.Â
Â
Also Nominated
Â
Women's Tennis- Antonia Balzert
Balzert was part of the doubles point clinching duo that won 6-1, then followed up with a comeback win in the No.2 singles match by a score of 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 to help CU beat Wyoming 6-1.
Â
Men's Track- Tyler Sconce
Sconce had a personal best of nearly three feet as he was less than an inch from the 60-foot barrier in the weight throw. His toss is good for fifth on the CU top-performers list.
Â
Women's Basketball- Jaylyn Sherrod
Sherrod led the team last week with 10.5 points per game in CU's 1-1 split. She opened the week with nine points and six assists in the Buffs' loss to Arizona State. Sherrod led the team in with 12 points in CU's upset of No. 11 Arizona. The win was Colorado's first against an AP ranked opponent since the start of the 20117 season (No. 15 Kentucky). She also dished out four assists, tying her with Shelley Sheetz for third on CU's freshman assist list.Â
Â
Men's Golf- John Paterson
CU sophomore John Paterson produced CU's best performance in the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, as he closed with a 1-over 73 that gave him a 3-over 72-68-73--213 for the weekend, good for an 11th place tie. Â His second round 68 was CU's best individual round over the three-day event, as he had a consistent performance across the board with 11 birdies and 36 pars against six bogeys and a double, the latter coming on No. 11 Sunday that prevented him a second straight day in red numbers. Â He played the 12 par-3 holes for the weekend at 1-under, tied for sixth-best overall, and also played the par-5s at 5-under. CU finished 10th.
Â
Men's Skiing- Filip Forejtek
Forjtek had a spectacular weekend in Park City, earning his best GS performance and two best slalom performances of his career in the three races. He finished second in the GS races and then took home fourth and second in the two slalom races. Prior to last week, he hadn't finished in the top 10 in his career in a slalom race.  The performance is especially big considering NCAA Qualification, where the top two finishes are counted in each skiers ranking. Forjtek moved up from No. 16 to No. 4 on the slalom qualification list and from No. 8 to No. 6 on the GS list, both critical for starting order and performance at the NCAA Championships.Â
