He opted to continue his career as a graduate transfer at Wake Forest with the extra year of eligibility granted to all NCAA student-athletes in 2020-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic

2019-20 (Junior): Saw action in 28 games averaging just over six minutes per contest. Finished with 45 points and 32 rebounds while shooting 42 percent from the field. His numbers began to increase in the latter portion of the season as he continued his large climb back from an ACL tear that forced him to miss the previous season. He scored 28 of his season's 45 points over the final 10 games and made 15 of his last 25 field goal attempts (.600). Had his best weekend in the home sweep of the Washington schools, averaging 7.0 points while shooting 60 percent (6 of 10) from the floor. Made all three shots against Washington State (1/23) and pulled down a season-best four rebounds in 12 minutes. All but seven of his blocks came during conference play, ranking sixth in the league during that span (1.4 bpg). Saw limited action in the first six games of the season, but was inserted into the starting lineup when senior forward Tory Miller-Stewart went down with a season-ending injury. He made his initial start at Colorado State (12/2), scoring six points and grabbing three rebounds in 16 minutes. He would go on to start 25 of 26 games, coming off the bench against Iowa (12/22), a game in which he scored a then personal-best 13 points on 6 of 10 shooting. Played a major role in one of the biggest wins of the season, scoring 15 points on a perfect 7 of 7 from the field against No. 14/16 Arizona (1/6), playing toe-to-toe with the Wildcats' formidable front court of Deandre Ayton, the future No. 1 pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, and Dusan Ristic, a solid veteran 7-footer. Scored 13 points and had a team season-best four blocked shots at home against Washington (1/20). Set a career-high with 16 points at Washington State (2/15) hitting 8 of 8 from the free throw line, matching the team's season-best in that category. Made 5 of 13 3-pointers on the season, in fact his first collegiate points came on a 3-pointer vs. Denver (11/14). Earned the team's Most Improved Player Award at the end of the season.

2016-17 (Freshman): Sat out the 2016-17 season as a redshirt in the Colorado program, fully participating in team activities and practices.

He shot 61 percent from the field and 73 percent from the free throw line earning honorable mention to the Class 5A All-State team. His senior year was even more impressive considering he missed his entire junior season after two ACL tears in his left knee with in 10 months of each other. Walton played club basketball for the Chauncey Billups Elite Basketball Academy from seventh grade through 10th grade, helping the team win a national championship at the 2014 Jayhawk Invitational.

Academics: Graduated from Colorado in May 2021 with his bachelor's degree in Strategic Communication, Advertising with minors in Business, Sports Media and Information Science. He carried a 3.97 GPA in high school and was named to the Academic All-State First Team. Named one of two Herbst Academic Center Student-Athletes of the Month for February 2019.

Personal: Born in Denver, he is the son of Matthew and Normena Walton. He has a younger sister, Ella. An uncle, Gregory Walton, was a three-year letterwinner on the CU track & field team, participating in the high jump. He enjoys the piano and playing 2K & FIFA with friends. Walton chose CU because "I grew up wanting to be a Buff. Hometown is 20 minutes away and a lot of family went here. It's also a good fit for me and what I want to do." Switched his jersey from No. 35 to No. 13 prior to the 2020-21 season to honor his aunt, Kristen Walton Maclin, who passed away on July 15, 2017, at the age of 46 after a long battle with leukemia. Kristen wore No. 13 during a standout volleyball career at Colorado State (1990-93), and he made the change to honor her memory. He has her No. 13 CSU jersey and proudly displays it in his apartment.
