RISE Social Justice Workshop - Dr. Andrew MacIntosh

Build a common understanding of the following terms 1) social justice; 2) activism; and 3) advocacy. Assess actions taken by athletes. Identify their goals, tactics used, consequences and outcomes. Generate ideas on how athletes, coaches and others in sports can effectively use their platform to advance social justice causes.

Want to gain an understanding of what it takes to work in sport? Join us for this panel discussion facilitated by Business of Sports Director, Jessica Baumgarten. Panelist include: Senior Vice President and Chief Ticket Officer at Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, David Burke; MLB Social Media Coordinator for the Colorado Rockies, Nicole Morris; Powdr, Partnerships & Operations Coordinator, Hanna Doyle and Senior Account Executive, Travis Putnam for the Colorado Rapids. Research suggests the advancement of women into sport leadership positions has stagnated due to factors such as limited access to female mentors, gender normalcy, cultural norms, and homologous reproduction.

RISE to Vote Panel Discussion- Tom Garfinkel, (CEO Miami Dolphins), Amber McReynolds (Director of Elections, Denver), Amy Peterson (VP of Special Projects, RISE)

RISE to Vote at CU will feature a panel discussion that will explore the intersection of sports, social change and the importance of voting. Panelists will include sports industry professionals and voting rights experts. In addition, RISE will also be hosting a voter registration drive in the lobby of the Student Recreation Center from 10 am to 5 pm. Please bring valid photo identification in order to register to vote.

Her work brings administrators, coaches and student-athletes together to develop sustainable inclusion strategies, gain a deeper understanding of intersectional identities, and find common ground across differences. Nevin is Co-founder and Managing Director of the LGBT SportSafe Inclusion Program, founded to create an infrastructure for sport leadership to lay an inclusive foundation to support students and student-athletes.

Keynote: Diving Deeper and Q&A with Nevin Caple

This session will explore best practices and policies for creating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) inclusive teams. Participants will have the opportunity to learn inclusive language, terminology and the roles of coaches, administrators and students in creating an inclusive culture at University of Colorado Boulder. This session will be followed by a Q&A, where participants will have the opportunity to collaborate and develop strategies to address topics such as managing dating and relationships, addressing slurs, negative stereotypes and bullying, and finding common ground between religion and LGBTQ inclusion.

Personal Story: The Climb from Being Big Time, "Defining Moments" - Corey Wilson

There are moments in our lives that we can identify as defining moments. Moments that change everything. For Corey Wilson, that moment came on February 27, 2009. While traveling home on I35 Corey’s car was involved in an accident, sending his car off the road, flipping twice and throwing Corey 45 feet from the vehicle, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down.

Inclusivity within Outdoor Recreation - Moderated by Mike McNeil with CU Disability Services and Alton Clark with African American Outdoors. Featuring Esha Mehta, CU Boulder Alumni, adaptive sports athlete and Representatives from Paradox Sports, the National Sports Center for the Disable, and Big City Mountaineers.

This panel discussion will be a focused conversation from industry experts and community members specific to inclusivity and diversity within Outdoor Recreation.

The New Title IX: Fighting for True Equality within Sports (Ceal Barry Senior Associate/Senior Women's Administrator and Carol Callan, USA Basketball Women's National Team Director)

This discussion will be centered around the history of Title IX and its present state within athletics. Session facilitators will be leading a discussion on the history of Title IX and its present form in regard to access and opportunities within women's collegiate, while focusing on the lack of representation in the media and overall public perception of women sports.

Race and the Deep Ball - Patrick Ferrucci

This session focuses on two recently published studies that examine how non-athletes stereotype NFL quarterbacks based on race. The results will be discussed and interpreted through the lens of theories of identity.

Beyond the Surface: Student-Athletes of Color Panel: Current Students and Alumni -  Charles Johnson (Moderator), Madeline Williams, Keith Pontiflet, Daniel Graham and others

Topics of education include: How to find support networks on/campus, how to support fellow student-athletes, self-advocacy and communication. Alumni will share their valuable experiences on creating pathways for success while providing a sounding board for current athletes experience. This session will focus on the Black Students Athlete experiences at a PWI.

Keynote: Chris Mosier, supported by Black Jack Pizza

Chris Mosier is a trailblazing athlete, coach, and the founder of TransAthlete.com. In 2015, he became the first openly trans man to make a Men's US National Team. Following the national championship race, he was instrumental in getting the International Olympic Committee policy on transgender athletes changed, and in June 2016 he became the first trans athlete to compete in a world championship race under the new rules, where he was the second fastest American man in his group. He has been called "the man who changed the Olympics" by the BBC and New York Magazine. Chris is a four-time member of Team USA, representing the United States in the sprint triathlon and the short course and long course duathlon, which is a run/bike/run event.

Discussing Dissent: Social Justice and Sport (Nicholas Villanueva, Jared Browsh and Shawn O'Neal)

This panel examines the history and current state of race, racism, and social protest in sport and society. Additionally, how coverage of conduct in athletics overall supports the bottom line and the maintenance of traditional ideologies with outliers only reinforcing these continued attempts to maintain the status quo.
