Buffs Open 2018 Spring Season in Puerto Rico
February 11, 2018 | Women's Golf
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The University of Colorado women's golf program opened its 2018 spring season here Sunday at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. The No. 14/19 Buffaloes struggled against windy conditions as they sit in 10th place after shooting a 26-over par or 310 in the opening round.
"Tough opening day for the team today," head coach Anne Kelly said. "Conditions were challenging as the wind blew 20-25 mph all day and overall we need to adjust to the Bermuda grass better. Everyone was disappointed with the scores and ready to make a comeback tomorrow."
The Buffs are competing against a solid field of competition including four top-25 programs and seven in the top-50. No. 4 Arkansas sits atop the leaderboard carding an even par 284 after the first round. Kent State sits eight strokes back in second shooting a 292 while Iowa State sits in third with a 12-over par 296. TCU is currently in fourth at 13-over par 297 with North Carolina State rounding out the top-five teams with a 15-over par 299.
Sophomore Robyn Choi stayed strong through the windy conditions leading the Buffs after the first day. Choi carded a 3-over par, 75 and is tied for 19th place on the leaderboard. Choi started on hole No. 1 and finished the front nine at 2-over par. Although she struggled a little bit more on the backend she collected three bogeys to one birdie and four pars to finish the back nine at 4-over. Choi leads the Buffs in pars with 12.
Gillian Vance and Alisha Lau are both tied for 48th place with an 8-over par 79. Although Vance tripled her first hole she bounced back with a birdie two holes later. Vance led the Buffs with three birdies on the day. Freshman Lau was even through her first five holes but then bogeyed hole No. 10 and couldn't shake it adding five more to finish the back nine at 6-over.
Brittany Fan with the rest of the CU team struggled a little against the windy conditions. Fan carded a 6-over par 77 in the first round and sits tied for 32nd place. She was fairly even throughout the day collecting 10 pars against seven bogeys and a birdie on her second to last hole.
Rebounding back from a virus, Kirsty Hodgkins sits tied for 52nd after shooting a 9-over par 80 in the first round. Hodgkins bogeyed her first hole but settled back to fire out four pars. She struggled on two holes No. 10 and 17 carding two doubles to finish a 7-over on the back nine.
Competing as an individual was freshman Jacklyn Murray who carded a 13-over 84 and is tied for 63rd.
Maria Fassi from Arkansas sits atop the individual leaderboard as the only individual under par at 3-under par 68. Four golfers are tied for second at even par 71 with Dylan Kim (Arkansas), Kroline Stormo (Kent State), Charlotte Lafourcade (Maryland), Michaela Finn, Kent State.
"We are definitely a little rusty, but happy to be here in Puerto Rico to play some consecutive rounds in warm temperatures and on green grass," Anne Kelly said. "Kirsty really had a tough day. She is still recovering from a virus that hit her hard-last week. We are looking forward to tomorrow and hope to improve our play."
The Buffs will continue action at the Lady Puerto Classic with tee times starting at 8:00 am local time, 5:00 am MT.
