February 13, 2018 | Women's Golf
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The University of Colorado women's golf team finished its first tournament of the spring season here Tuesday in fifth place at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, hosted by Purdue.
The Buffaloes, ranked No. 19 in the latest GolfStat poll, combined to shoot 298 or 14-over par in the final round of the 54-hole event, the second lowest round score in the field. They posted a 55-over par, 907 overall team score for the tournament. Fourth ranked Arkansas won the event staying atop the leaderboard all three days and carded a 30-over par 882. Ten strokes back, Iowa State shot a 40-over par 892 to finish second while Kent State came in third with a 45-over par, 897. North Carolina State took fourth place with a 904 and Colorado rounded out the top five teams climbing one spot to place fifth overall.
"Pretty solid day for the team," head coach Anne Kelly said. "Although, everyone felt like they left a lot of birdies out there on the course. The last two rounds I think we were the one of the low teams, the first round just really hurt us. We need to work on getting off to a little better start."
Sophomore Robyn Choi posted the best three-day total for the Buffs, shooting a 2-over par on Tuesday to finish with a 75-72-73—220 scorecard. Choi climbed two spots on the leaderboard to tie for third. This is Choi's fourth top five finish during the 2017-18 season as she finished fifth at the Branch Law/Dick McGuire Invitational, second at the Coeur D'Alene Collegiate Invite and third at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invite. Choi was second in most pars with 39. Choi's third round consisted of 16 pars against two bogeys to finish at 2-over par 73.
"I am really happy for Robyn," Kelly said. "She played solid golf all week in tough conditions and had an outstanding finish in a top-quality field."
Hodgkins finished the tournament tied for 16th place, posting an 80-73-74—227 or 14-over par final scorecard. Her third round was comprised of 13 pars, one birdie and four bogeys.
Senior Brittany Fan recorded her lowest round of the tournament Tuesday, shooting 4-over par 75 and wrapped up the tournament at 15-over par, 228. Over the three day tournament Fan collected 32 pars and five birdies. Fan finished tied for 20th which marks her sixth straight tournament finishing in the top 20.
Gillian Vance climbed four spots on the leaderboard to finish tied for 36th place at 20-over par. Vance closed with her best round of 5-over 76 to give her a final scorecard of 79-78-76—233. Her final round consisted of 13 pars and five bogeys.
Freshman Alisha Lau wrapped up the tournament with a 5-over par 76. Lau and Vance's scorecard were very similar on the last round as both collected 13 pars against five bogeys. She posted a 237 or 24-over par and tied for 45th place.
"Alisha made good progress with her ball striking this week and Brittany is really close to shooting some sub-par rounds. Gillian improved every day which is a good sign and Kirsty just needs some putts to drop and she'll be in contention to win again."
Freshman Jaclyn Murray, played as an individual placed 65th, posting a 252 or 39-over par. She shot a 12-over 83 in the closing round.
Maria Fassi of Arkansas won medalist honors shooting a 3-over par 216 three day total. Celia Barquin Arozamena (Iowa State) finished three strokes back at 6-over par 219. The duo of Robyn Choi and Laura Kowohi (North Carolina State) placed third with a 7-over par 220 with Pimpnipa Panthong (Kent State) and Dylan Kim (Arkansas) rounded out the top five with an 8-over par 221.
"Overall it feels like we just went through spring training week and looking forward to the next tourney," Kelly said.
The Buffs will head out to San Luis Obispo, California to play in the Bruin Wave Invitational on Feb. 26-27.
