Buffs Round Out Match Play Wednesday vs. Cal
RANCHO SANTE FE, Calif. – Colorado picked up wins from sophomores Robyn Choi and Kirsty Hodgkins but it wasn't enough to top host San Diego State as the Aztecs pulled out a 3-2 match play win in the consolation round of the SDSU March Mayhem at The Farms Golf Course on Tuesday.
Â
San Diego State's Milagros Chaves made par at the par-5 No. 9 to clinch her match with Colorado junior Gillian Vance, 2&1, sending the Aztecs to the consolation final against UCLA. Colorado will face California in its final match play of the tournament on Wednesday.
Â
"It was another tough loss, and although things haven't quite come together for us this trip, I feel good about how the team is hitting the ball and a lot of other things," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "We just need to clean up a few sloppy mistakes such as missing greens with wedges. We all need to putt a little better. Hopefully we can finish up this trip with the win tomorrow against Cal."
Â
The Vance-Chaves battle was the tightest of the five individual matches, playing at 1 up or all squared for the majority of the round. With the match starting all square after the opener at No. 11, Chaves won the next two holes to briefly go 2 up. Vance erased that lead immediately taking the next two holes with a par at No. 14 and a birdie at No. 15.
Â
Vance took the lead 1 up at No. 17 with a par, but Chaves birdied No. 18 to square the match through eight holes. Chaves reclaimed the lead at No. 1 with a par and stayed 1 up through the No. 4 hole.
Â
Vance birdied the par-3 No. 5 to square the match one final time, but Chaves took the lead for good at No. 6 with a par. The golfers played square the next two holes, but Chaves clinched the match on the 17th hole when she carded par on the par-5 No. 9 while Vance bogeyed.
Â
Choi cruised to a 7&5 decision over Haleigh Krause. After falling behind one hole early, Choi took the lead for good on the fifth hole of the match with a par-3 at No. 14. Choi birdied five of the next eight holes, claiming wins on all five, including the clincher on the par-3 No. 4.
Â
Hodgkins also used the birdie to her advantage in defeating Sarah Kjellker, 3&1. Kjellker took an early lead at 1 up with a birdie on the par-4 No. 13 and the match stayed that way over the next five holes until Hodgkins birdied the par-4 No. 1 to square the match. Hodgkins then birdied three of her next six to build a 3 up lead with three to go after a birdie on the par-4 No. 8. Kjellker cut the lead to 2 up with a birdie at No. 9, but Hodgkins sealed the match by carding a par-4 at No. 10.
Â
Senior Brittany Fan dropped her match to Gioia Carpinelli, 4&3. Fan had an early 1 up lead after a par-4 at No. 11 and held that through three holes. A bogey on No. 14 for Fan, put the match at all squared and Carpinelli took the lead for good with back-to-back birdies at the par-4 No. 15 and par-3 No. 16. Fan was able to knock one hole off the lead with a par-4 at No. 4, but Carpinelli picked the hole back up at No. 5 and clinched the match when both golfers logged par-4 at No. 6.
Â
Freshman Elle Otten fell in her match to Georgia Lacey, 4&3. Otten led early, going 2 up after pars at No. 12 and No. 13. Lacey squared the match by winning the next two holes, with a birdie at No. 14 and a par at No. 15. Otten picked up one hole with a par at No. 2, but lacey closed out the match after a birdie at No. 7.
Â
"We actually scored ok today," head coach Anne Kelly said. "Robyn was 5-under par and I think Kirsty was about 3-under. Brittany was maybe only 1-over and Gillian possibly 2-or-3 over. But San Diego State played very well on their home course and won the match."
