RANCHO SANTE FE, Calif. – Colorado and California played to a 2 ½-2 ½ draw in the seventh place match to close out the San Diego State March Mayhem at the Farms Golf Course on Wednesday.
The Buffaloes gained the seventh-place nod by winning the tiebreaker over California with a 6-3 margin of victory in the individual matches.
USC, which won Monday's stroke play round by 15 strokes over Texas, also won the overall match play championship by shutting out the Longhorns 5-0 in the finals.
Colorado was in position to win the match out right, but settled for the draw after California's Marthe Wold won her final two holes against Buffaloes sophomore Kirsty Hodgkins to take their match 1 up.
Starting from the No. 10 hole, Hodgkins took an early 2 up lead with a par-4 at No. 13 and a birdie on the par-3 No.14. Wold won No. 15 with a par-4, to knock Hodgkins lead back to 1 up. Hodgkins carried that advantage over the next four holes and increased her lead back to 2 up with a par-3 at No. 2. The Cal Bear trimmed Hodgkins' lead back to 1 up with a par-3 at No. 5 where the score stayed through 16 holes, forcing Wold to win the final two holes for the match.
Unfortunately, for Hodgkins and the Buffaloes, that's exactly what happened. Wold made par-4 at No. 8 to square the match and birdied the par-5 No. 9 to win 1 up and allowing Cal to salvage the draw.
Sophomore Robyn Choi won her match over Cal's Jiyoon Jang, 3&1. Jang had the first advantage, going 1 up after the third hole with a par-4 at No. 13. Choi quickly took the hole back and squared the match with a birdie on the par-2 No. 14. Three holes later, Choi took the lead for good with a par-4 at No. 17. She won four of five holes during that stretch to reach 4 up through 11 holes, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 No. 18. Choi maintained a two-hole or better lead through the remaining six, closing out the match with a birdie on the par-4 No. 9.
"We won today, but it still wasn't our best play," head coach Anne Kelly said. "Robyn played a good round of golf. She won her match pretty easily and was under par for the day. Kirsty was playing well but had a tough finish to her match. She had the lead through 16 and then her opponent came strong at the end."
Junior Gillian Vance claimed a 3&2 win over California's Maria Herraez Galvez. Vance struck first, going 1 up at the first hole with a par-4 at No. 10. Herraez Galvez came back to win No. 12 and No. 13 to take her only lead of the match. Vance took advantage of a six-hole stretch where Herraez Galvez shot bogey or worse, moving to 2 up through nine holes. She increased that lead to 3 up with a par-5 at No. 3 and finished off the match on her 16th hole with a par-4 at No. 7.
Freshman Ellen Otten and Cal's Amina Wolf played their match all squared, where neither golfer gained more than a one-hole advantage. With the round starting at No. 11, Otten made par-5 at No. 12 to go 1 up. She stayed 1 up for four holes, until Wolf won two straight to go 1 up at No. 17. Otten would come back and square the match following a Wolf one-hole advantage three times over the next eight holes, including birdies at the par-4 No. 4 and par-4 No. 6. A par gave Otten a final 1 up lead at No. 7, but Wolf erased that one hole later, and the match stayed even over the final three.
Senior Brittany Fan dropped her match to Cal's Marianne Li, 2&1. Fan took an early 1 up lead four holes into her match, but three straight bogeys allowed the Li to go 1 up at No. 17, an advantage she would never relinquish. Li increased her lead to 3 up with a birdie at the par-3 No. 2. Fan won three of the next five holes, but it was only enough to trim Li's lead to 1 up after 14 holes. Li went back 2 up at No. 8 and closed out the match at No. 10 when both golfers carded a par-4.
"Brittany was in a similar circumstance (to Hodgkins)," Kelly said. "She didn't play all that badly but her opponent played very consistently and mistake free. It was a close match but unfortunately Brittany was on the wrong side of it when it was all over.
"Elle fought hard for a draw today and made a great up and down on the last hole to tie. Gillian won easily, which was good after she played so well yesterday and ended up with the loss."
Colorado will return to California April 8-10 as the Buffaloes and Oregon co-host the 2018 Silverado Showdown in Napa. The Silverado will be Colorado's last regular season tournament before the Pac-12 Championship, April 22-24, in Seattle.
"I think everyone on the team is ready for a day or two off after seven straight days of golf," Kelly said. "But (after that) we make our final push for the end of the regular season and get ready for postseason play."
