April 10, 2018 | Women's Golf
NAPA, Calif. – With one final competitive round before the postseason, the University of Colorado women's golf team got the momentum boost it needed.
Â
The No. 20 ranked and host Buffaloes shot their best team round of the spring, an even-par 288, to finish tied with Oregon for 10th place at 27-over (891) at the 2018 Silverado Showdown at the Silverado Country Club North Course on Tuesday.
Â
After shooting 14-over on day one, and 13-over in the second round, the Buffaloes put together a solid effort in their final showing before  the 2018 Pac-12 Championships, April 22-24, in Seattle.
Â
No. 8 USC ran away with the team title on the final day, finishing the 54-hole tournament with a 5-under 859 to win by 10 strokes. The Trojans, who led after the first round before falling into second yesterday, shot 6-under in the final round to pull away from the field. California was second at 5-over while Arizona, UCLA and round two leader Stanford tied for third at 6-over.
Â
USC's Jennifer Chang and UCLA's Patty Tavatanakit shared medalist honors with an 8-under 208. Tavatanakit shot a 68 in the final round to catch Chang, who had at least a share of the lead the previous two days. Arizona's Bianca Pagdanganan and California's Jiyoon Jang tied for third one stroke back at 7-under.
Â
Senior Brittany Fan and sophomore Robyn Choi had nearly flawless outings, logging only a single bogey apiece in their respective rounds. Fan's 4-under 68 tied for the second-lowest round of the day, allowing her to finish tied for 12th overall at 1-over, 217. Choi shot a 2-under 70, finishing tied for 28th at 5-over 221.
Â
"A better day for the Buffs," head coach Anne Kelly said. "We had much better course management and concentration, and really good play by Brittany and Robyn."
Â
Fan had just one hiccup, a bogey on the par-4 No. 14, which was actually her second hole as a shotgun start was utilized for final round action. From there, she was outstanding, starting with a birdie on the par-5 No. 16 to get back to even.
Â
She made par on the next five holes before making her move up the leaderboard. Fan scored three-straight birdies, beginning at the par-4 No. 4 to move up to 3-under. She picked up her fifth birdie on the par-4 No. 10 and played even the rest of the way to finish off her second-best round of the season.
Â
"I wasn't hitting any better than I did the first two days, the only difference is I capitalized on my well struck approach shots today," Fan said. "I felt much better putting, had good connections speed wise on the greens. I probably left three or four more shots out there, but of course I'm happy getting 4-under today."
Â
Choi, also starting from No. 14, reeled off seven straight pars to begin her round. She began her climb up the leaderboard with birdies at the par-3 No. 3 and par-5 No. 5 to get to 2-under. Choi closed out the front nine with four pars and added two more to begin the final stretch on the back. She moved up to 3-under with her third birdie of the day at the par-4 No. 12, but her bid for a sub-70 round fell just short with a bogey at No. 13.
Â
Sophomore Kirsty Hodgkins had her best round of the three-day tournament at 2-over 74. She began the day at No. 15, and got off to a good start with a birdie at the par-5 No. 16. Hodgkins fell back on the course's front, playing the first nine holes at 4-over. Once she made the turn to the back, Hodgkins rallied, picking up birdies on a pair of par 4's at No. 10 and No. 13 to finish the tournament tied for 52nd at 11-over 227.
Â
Junior Gillian Vance logged a 4-over 76 for the second straight round and finished the tournament in 76th with a 14-over 233. Vance started from No. 16, playing even over her first three holes. She dipped to 1-over with a bogey at No. 1, but moved back to even after seven holes with her lone birdie of the day at the par-4 No. 4. Vance played the next seven holes at 2-over, before ending the day with bogeys on two of her last four.
Â
Freshman Alisha Lau rounded out her tournament with an 8-over 80. Lau started at No. 14 and played her first eight holes at 4-over. Her most successful stretch came on the course's front nine, logging five straight pars before capping off the front with a birdie at the par-5 No. 9. Lau dropped five strokes over the last four holes to finish the tournament in a tie for 71st place at 15-over, 231.
Â
Freshman Elle Otten, playing as an individual, shot 10-over 82, to close out the tournament in 89th place at 31-over. A pair of birdies, the first at the 344-yard par-4 No. 8, and the second at the 365-yard par-4 No. 12 highlighted her final round.
Â
"All the teams here are very competitive, it was like a practice round for the Pac-12's," Fan said. "It was a good way to see where we are and what we need to do; look at the little things we need to tighten up. Everyone is coming around and playing better, so we'll be ready in 10 days for the Pac-12 (Championship)."
Â
NOTES: Colorado's 288 team score was its fifth best of the entire season and the even-par result tied for fourth-best in relation to par. The Buffaloes have finished in the top 10 in their last 19 stroke play tournaments. Fan's round was her second in the 60s this season, just one stroke behind her 67 in the first round of the Meadow Club Collegiate. With Fan's 12th place finish, it marks the 45th consecutive full team stroke play tournament the Buffaloes have had at least one golfer with a top 20 finish, dating back to Sept. 2014. Fan's 10 top 20 finishes this season ranks third in Colorado's record book while her 27 career top 20s ties her with Esther Lee (2014-17) for second all-time…Choi played the final 27 holes of the tournament at 5-under after playing the first 27 holes at 10-over. Choi's 40 pars tied for fifth in the field.
