CU Track and Field Team Competed in the Cardinal Classic at Stanford Yesterday
BOULDER – The CU track and field team sent a contingent to Palo Alto to compete in the Cardinal Classic this weekend. They came away with personal bests and impressive NCAA marks, which is great looking forward to the Pac-12s and NCAA Championship. "End of the first day out here in Palo Alto, quite a few pretty good marks, we are searching for NCAA qualifying marks this weekend, and progressions towards getting ready to race well at the Pac-12s," Head coach Mark Wetmore said.
In the 400-meter hurdles Gabby Scott, Eriana Henderson and Valerie Welch all recorded personal bests with times of 59.14, 59.79 and 60.48 respectively. Aaron McCoy raced for the men and recorded a time of 53.05. "We had some very good 400-meter hurdles for men and women, personal bests for each of the three women and a nice debut for Aaron, and he'll keep getting better," Wetmore said.
"Finally for the end of the day, probably the best race of the day, Zach Perrin ran the NCAA champion Grant Fisher right to the finish line at Grant Fisher's home town. 13.37 is a wonderful time, just quite a few great 5k runners at CU on the list ahead of him, four of whom are Olympians. Not far behind him Ryan Forsyth, when the lists come out on Monday they will be in the top 6 or 8 of the NCAA I would think. It has been a useful trip so far," Wetmore told me.
Makena Morley competed in the women's 5,000-meter and recorded a time of 15:40.88, a personal best for her. Behind her were Erin Clark and Kaitlyn Benner, who recorded times of 15:56.23 and 15:57.27 respectively. "Great race for Makena Morley, a big personal best, and that moves her high up the list for NCAA qualifiers for regionals in that event. Behind her Erin Clark and Kaitlyn Benner, good times, for this time of the year and this point of our training useful marks for qualifying for the regionals," Wetmore said.
