SEATTLE – For this day, call the number 13 a good luck charm.
Eagles by Robyn Choi and Brittany Fan on the par-5 No. 13 helped propel the University of Colorado to a 3-over par 291 in the first round of the 2018 Pac-12 Conference Women's Golf Championship at the Broadmoor Golf Club.
The No. 20 ranked Buffaloes are tied with No. 14 Arizona State and No. 4 USC for third place after round one, four strokes behind first-day leader UCLA. The No. 6 ranked Bruins were the only team in the red in Sunday's first round with a 1-under 287. No. 6 Stanford is in second with a 2-over 290.
"We got off to a much better start today," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "Despite a few hiccups with double bogeys, the team hung tough and finished strong. This is a very challenging course, one of the best we have played for a Pac-12 Championship."
After a quiet beginning, playing even for the first eight holes, Colorado faced some adversity around the turn, falling to 8-over through 11. The Buffaloes quickly turned that around, playing 7-under the next three holes, No. 12 through No. 14, vaulting Colorado right back into contention.
Sophomore Kirsty Hodgkins picked up a stroke with her first birdie of the day on the 354-yard par-4 No. 12 while the rest of the team held even.
Then came the 422-yard No. 13, which played as the course's easiest hole in round one, and the Buffaloes took full advantage. Freshman Alisha Lau pushed through first with a birdie while Hodgkins followed with a par.
Choi and Fan both reached the No. 13 green in two shots and nailed their respective putts to put Colorado's four scorers at 5-under on that hole alone.
"Both (Choi and Fan) hit excellent shots in and then made their putts," Kelly said. "That was a huge boost for our team and our finish."
Fan finished with a 2-under 70 and is tied for seventh overall just two strokes off the lead. Lilia Vu of UCLA, Sarah Rhee of Washington and Ziyi Wang of Stanford are tied atop the day-one leaderboard, each shooting 4-under 68. Choi is also in top 10 position, tied for ninth with a 1-under 71.
Fan began her day with seven straight pars before wading into the red with birdie at the 315-yard par 4 No. 8. She fell back to even at No. 10 and stayed there for the next two holes before jumping to 2-under at No. 13. She dropped a stroke with a bogey at No. 16, but the senior finished off the round with a birdie at No. 18.
"Brittany really played her last few holes well and made a great up and down with a very tough hole location on 18 for a birdie," Kelly said.
Choi had Colorado's first red number of the day with a birdie at No. 2, but fell back to even immediately with a bogey at No. 3. Choi then reeled off nine straight pars before her big leap at No. 13. The next par-5 wasn't as kind, as she dropped back to 1-under at No. 15, but stayed even over the final three holes.
"Robyn didn't have her best ball striking day, but her short game was A+ today," Kelly said.
Hodgkins recorded a 3-over 75 and is tied for 27th after round one. She played the front nine at 1-over, logging eight pars with a bogey at No. 4. Hodgkins ran into trouble at the turn with back-to-back double bogeys to fall to 5-over. She regrouped with a birdie at No. 12 and another at the Par-3 No. 14. She closed out her round with four straight pars.
Lau also finished tied for 27th at 3-over. She was Colorado's low scorer through the first five holes at 1-under after back-to-back birdies at the par-4 No. 4 and the par-3 No. 5. She fell back to even at No. 6 finished the front nine at 2-over after a double-bogey at No. 9. Lau played the first six holes of the back at even. After a pair of bogeys, she finished on a high note with a birdie at No. 18.
Junior Gillian Vance is tied for 52nd after carding a 10-over 82. She played the first four holes at 1-over, but bogeyed seven of the next nine holes. Vance had three-straight pars at No. 14 through No. 16, before finishing the last two at 2-over.
"Alisha and Kirsty held their rounds together after tough holes and that kept our team in contention," Kelly said. "Gillian had a bad day, but she is close and I'm confident she'll make a good come back in the next couple of days."
Colorado will pair with Washington for round two, teeing off at 10:30 a.m. MT on Monday. Washington is sixth after the first round, two strokes behind Colorado at 5-over.
NOTES: Choi set a school single-season record with her 11th sub-par round of the season. She broke a tie with Jess Wallace (2010-11) and Alex Stewart (2011-12). Fan logged her 10th sub-par round of the season to join Wallace and Stewart on CU's single-season list. Fan's 70 ties for the fifth-best round by a Buffalo in a conference tournament. Choi's 14 pars in round one tied for the most in the field. Hodgkins was tied for fifth with 13. Fan played the par-5s at 3-under, tying for fourth after day one.
