BOULDER—The USC at Colorado football game ...
---------Â
END OF GAME
After taking possession in CU territory, the Trojans gained one first down and were able to run out the clock. Final score, USC 27, Colorado 24.
----------
1:59 LEFT IN GAME
After CU closed the gap to 27-24, USC couldn't move the ball and punted. CU took possession at its own 21, but after converting one third down, the Buffs came up short on third and fourth down and USC took over at the Colorado 43 with 1:59 left in the game.
--------
6:13 REMAINING 4TH QTR
Colorado's defense came up with a stop deep in USC territory and CU's special teams made a big play to help the Buffs cut into USC's lead.
USC punted from its own 10 and Buff senior Nelson Spruce returned the kick 45 yards. A 2-yard personal foul penalty on the return gave the Buffs first-and-goal from the 2, and two plays later, QB Cade Apsay dropped a 1-yard touchdown pass into the arms of tight end George Frazier. Diego Gonzalez's PAT cut USC's lead to 27-24 with 6:13 still left in the game.
---------
8:23 REMAINING 4TH QTR
After USC's one-play scoring drive, Colorado managed to move close to midfield, converting a fourth-down in the process. The drive stalled, however, at the CU 46 and the Buffs punted. Alex Kinney dropped a beautiful kick that was downed at the USC 5-yard line.
----------
13:55 REMAINING 4TH QTR
A blocked field goal led to a USC touchdown early in the fourth period.Â
Colorado attempted a 51-yard field goal, but the attempt was blocked and USC returned the ball to the CU 36. On the first play of the possession, USC's Cody Kessler threw a 36-yard scoring strike to JuJu Smith-Schuster. The PAT gave the Trojans a 27-17 lead with 13:55 left in the game.
-----------
END THIRD QUARTER
At the end of the third quarter, the Buffs faced a third-and-13 from the USC 38 after the Trojans sacked Colorado quarterback Cade Apsay on second down. The Buffs had moved from their own 35, with the big play a 17-yard Patrick Carr run.
The quarter break came at a good time for the CU defense, which spent too much time on the field in the third quarter and looked visibly tired on the Trojans' last possession of the quarter.
-----------
2:32 REMAINING 3RD QTR
After recovering a CU fumble at the Colorado 34, the Trojans took seven plays to score a go-ahead touchdown. QB Cody Kessler completed a 14-yard pass on third-and-6, then threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Taylor McNamara four plays later. Alex Wood's PAT gave USC a 20-17 lead with 2:32 remaining in the third quarter.
-------------
5:12 REMAINING 3RD QTR
Immediately following USC's first touchdown of the game, Colorado running back Christian Powell fumbled and USC recovered. The Trojans took possession at CU's 34-yard line.
-----------
5:34 LEFT 3RD QTR
The Trojans finally found the end zone, driving 83 yards in 13 plays and getting one very important defensive penalty in the process. Quarterback Cody Kessler completed four passes on the drive, including the 4-yard touchdown throw to Jahleel Pinner. The drive was extended when Kessler was sacked on third-and-goal from the 8 but Colorado was flagged for offsides on the play.
Alex Wood's PAT cut Colorado's lead to 17-13 with 5:34 left in the third quarter.
-----------
11:54 REMAINING 3RD QTR
The Buffs opened the second half with the ball first and moved past midfield before a sack on third-and-3 forced a punt.
CU held a 208-168 edge in offensive yardage. USC was just 1-for-7 on third downs; CU 3-for-7.
USC took over on its own 17-yard line.
-----------
HALFTIME
USC added three points to its total on the last play of the half on a 40-yard Alex Wood field goal. The Trojans went 52 yards in 10 plays, 28 of them coming on a Cody Kessler pass to Steven Mitchell. CU came up with a big quarterback sack on third-and-7, with Kenneth Olugbode recording the tackle with help from Derek McCartney.Â
CU blocked the first field goal try, but the Buffs had called timeout just before the snap. Wood was good on his second attempt and the half ended with CU leading, 17-6.
-------------
3:14 REMAINING 2ND QTR
After taking a 14-3 lead, CU's defense held and forced a USC punt. With starting QB Sefo Liufau on crutches, backup quarterback Cade Apsay engineered an 11-play, 65 yard drive that yielded a 28-yard Diego Gonzalez field goal for a 17-3 Colorado lead.
Apsay completed passes of 20 yards to Sean Irwin and 11 yards to Nelson Spruce on the drive and Donovan Lee had a 13-yard run. The drive stalled when Apsay threw incomplete on third-and-6 from the USC 10.
-------------
9:14 REMAINING 2ND QTR
After a CU punt, Buffs senior safety Jered Bell intercepted USC quarterback Cody Kessler and returned the pick 19 yards to the USC 26. Five plays later, backup quarterback Cade Apsay threw his first touchdown pass as a Buff, a 9-yard strike to Nelson Spruce. The score capped a five-play, 26-yard drive that included a defensive penalty.Â
It was Spruce's 22nd career touchdown catch, tying him with Scotty McKnight for the all-time Colorado lead.
-----------
END FIRST QUARTER
The Buffs took a 7-3 lead into the second quarter and had possession in USC territory. But after being sacked, CU quarterback Sefo Liufau had to be helped off the field.
In between quarters, CU honored longtime broadcaster Larry Zimmer, who will make this, his 42nd year of calling Buffs games, his last.Â
Friday was Zimmer's 80th birthday, and the crowd serenaded him with "Happy Birthday," led by Firefall co-founder Jock Bartley.
On the first play of the second quarter, backup CU quarterback Cade Apsay took over and was sacked for an 8-yard loss and the Buffs punted.
--------
5:15 LEFT FIRST QTR
After the two teams traded punts, Colorado put together a seven-play, 61-yard touchdown drive to take a 7-3 lead. CU quarterback Sefo Liufau completed all three pass attempts on the drive for 41 yards, including a 20-yarder to running back Patrick Carr. Phillip Lindsay capped the drive with a 4-yard run up the middle with 5:15 left in the first quarter.
It was the first time Colorado had a lead on USC since the first time the two teams met as members of the Pac-12 in 2011.
-----------
10:35 REMAINING FIRST QTR
After a couple big plays to open the game, Southern California had to settle for a field goal after a big goal-line stand from the Buffs. USC had a first-and-goal from the 6, then second-and-goal from the 1, but a blitz from safety Tedric Thompson resulted in a 3-yard loss and USC QB Cody Kessler threw incomplete on third down. Alex Wood's 22-yard field goal gave USC a 3-0 lead with 10:35 left in the first quarter.
