Folsom Field Concert Sound Level Guidelines

To address concerns of the community related to the impact of sound levels on campus and the neighboring community, the University of Colorado Boulder will be implementing new guidelines designed to mitigate noise levels at concerts held at Folsom Field.  These guidelines establish sound pressure level limits, measured in decibels (dB), that will be closely monitored and, if necessary, adjusted during an event.

A Sound Pressure Level (SPL) monitoring system and sound engineer, provided by the University of Colorado, will be located at the sound mix position closest to the stage to provide the performers’ sound engineers with data that will enable them to make real-time adjustments to sound level and frequency.

  • The A-weighted Leq sound pressure level, including volume and frequency, shall not exceed 106.0 dBA or 1-minute averages
  • The Leq sound pressure levels shall not exceed 119.0 dB for the logarithmic sum of sound pressure level energy in the un-weighted 25, 31.5, 40, 50, 63, and 80 Hz one-third-octave bands for 1-minute averages. These levels will be referred to as dB1 on the house monitoring system.

Should sound levels exceed these parameters, the sound will be adjusted immediately. CU Athletics will also be engaging a third-party company to conduct live monitoring during concerts in the area surrounding Folsom Field to provide additional data.
