November 06, 2018 | Football, General, Volleyball
BOULDER – Volleyball's Justine Spann and football's Tyler Francis were named the CU Athletes of the Week, presented by Arrow, for the week of Oct. 29 to Nov. 4.
Justine Spann, a junior outside hitter from Chandler, Ariz., posted a career-high 24 kills at No.2 Stanford. This was the first time CU went to a fifth set in Palo Alto. Spann and Buffs were down 0-2 in the match before challenging the best team in the nation to a fifth set. They are just the second team to do so all year and first at Stanford. Spann also contributed to the 3-0 victory at Cal.
Tyler Francis, a freshman from Carlsbad Calif., joined the team as a walk-on for August camp and did not know he was going to make the trip to Arizona until the day before. He responded with a perfect collegiate debut, scoring 10 points as he was 4-of-4 on PAT kicks and 2-of-2 on field goals from 25 and 48 yards. The 48-yarder was the fourth-longest by a freshman in CU history. Before kicking for the Buffs, Francis didn't kick a football until his senior year in high school, mostly because of his soccer background.
Others Nominated:
Tyler Bey, Men's Basketball - Led Colorado with 16 points and 11 rebounds in the Buffaloes' exhibition win over Colorado School of Mines. Bey hit 6 of 9 from the field including his lone attempt from 3-point range. He was also 3 of 4 from the free throw line.
Aubrey Knight, Women's Basketball – Led Colorado with 17 points in the Buffs' exhibition win over Southern Nazarene. Knight went 8 of 9 from the field, grabbed 7 rebounds, and added 3 steals.
Kirsty Hodgkins, Women's Golf - Tied for fourth at the SMU Trinity Forest Invitational and helped the Buffs finish fourth as a team. She earned her first top-5 finish of the season by shooting a 2-over 218, which is her best score of the fall.
