No. 18 Buffs Battle to Draw at Arizona

September 30, 2018 | Soccer

Colorado and Arizona finish in 1-1 tie

TUCSON, Ariz.—The No. 18 Colorado women's soccer team played to its second consecutive 1-1 draw on Sunday. The Buffs remain unbeaten on the season, closing the weekend at 9-0-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Shots came at a premium in the first half on Sunday, with each side recording just four.

The game's offensive excitement all came in the 12th minute.

Arizona (8-2-1, 1-1-1) got on the board first, 11:12 into the contest. Jada Talley won the ball at midfield and raced down the left wing. She beat CU goalkeeper Jalen Tompkins from the center of the 18, placing the ball in the right upper corner.

The Buffs did not have to wait long to even the score. It took junior Taylor Kornieck just 14 seconds to find the back of the net, following the Arizona goal. Erin Greening sent the ball into the box off the kickoff. Kornieck won the race down the field and volleyed the ball high over Arizona's Lainey Burdett for her sixth goal of the season.

Both teams played solid defense throughout the rest of the afternoon.

The Wildcats got a chance in the 40th minute, catching Tompkins on the move. Arizona had a look at a wide-open net but CU defender Kayleigh Webb cleared the ball to safety from the goal line.

Tompkins made the save of the afternoon in the 59th minute. Arizona was awarded a free kick from just off the 18-yard mark. Amanda Parker stepped up and struck the ball towards the upper right corner. Tompkins took one step to her left and leaped to make the diving save.

Emily Groark had the Buffs' best chance at the lead in the 85th minute. She put the ball on Arizona's Lainey Burdett from the top of the six. Burdett was able to tip enough of the shot to direct high into the crossbar.

Tatum Barton fought off three defenders in the 110th minute, looking to end the contest in the final minutes. She fired just wide of the left post on CU's final shot of the day.

Arizona outshot Colorado, 6-3, in the two overtime periods. The Buffs totaled the only two shots on net, both coming in the first overtime.

KEY STATISTIC: Colorado was outshot 17-15. It was the second consecutive game and just third time CU has been outshot on the season. All three times have come on the road.

UP NEXT: Colorado returns home next week for a pair of matches. The Buffs will take on Washington State on Thursday (Oct. 4). CU will host Washington on Sunday (Oct. 7).

Notes: Kornieck's goal was the fastest goal to follow an opponent's goal in program history (00:14)…the previous mark was 22 seconds in 1997…Kornieck's goal was her 21st of her career and is now tied for sixth in career goals…She remains fifth in career points, now with 59…CU's 12-game unbeaten streak remains the second-longest in program history…Greening's assist was her first point of the season, having missed eight matches earlier in the season…Colorado has trailed just twice this season (Marquette and Arizona).

Head Coach Danny Sanchez

On overall performance
"I thought we played well. Arizona is a good team. Once again, we went into a tough environment on the road and got results. I was proud of our effort. I was really pleased with our response after giving up the goal. Taylor's goal was first class. Not many players in the country can score that goal.

The key to the match was probably about 15-20 minutes of the game. We had a hold of the ball and created a ton of opportunities. We just were unable to finish. Emily [Groark] put on off the post and we had some other good chances. Arizona changed up a little bit, going into overtime. They had more numbers behind the ball, so we did not have as many opportunities. We still had a couple of good chances. You want to go on the road and get results and we did that. Now we turn our focus to Washington State, who will probably be ranked eighth or night in the country come Thursday."

On strong play of the defense
"I thought they were very good today. JJ [Tompkins] was good in goal as usual. I was really proud of Sofia [Weiner]. I think she played all but one minute and was rock solid. I think you can see Erin [Greening] getting back into it. Her fitness is back, and I think she was very good today. Kayleigh [Webb] and Jesse [Loren] were great. 110 minutes, basically for two games in a row. Very limited opportunities that we allowed. It just wasn't our day to get three points. We will regroup and get ready for Thursday."
