July 15, 2019 | Volleyball
Fort Lauderdale, Fla. – For the third year in a row, the University of Colorado associate head coach Lee Maes has been selected as an assistant coach for the USAV High Performance Championships in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
Â
"It's an honor and privilege to work with some of the best coaches and athletes our country produces," said Maes. "To develop young talent and assist them in their pursuit of Olympic and international aspirations is a humbling and cherished opportunity."
Â
Maes will be coaching the Women's Junior A1 Team along with UCF associate head coach Bryan Doyon, Oregon alum and Empire Volleyball Club coach Kathy O'Neil and Utah associate head coach Malia Shoji. The team features 22 of the best players under-19 in the nation.
Â
The team will compete at the High Performance Championships, one of USA Volleyball's flagship events, July 13-22, at the Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The 100+ team event features tournaments for both boys and girls that include teams from USA Volleyball Region HP teams, International teams and teams from the USA Volleyball High Performance pipeline. Past International teams have included: Brazil, Chile, China, Dominican Republic, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, and Puerto Rico.
Â
In the past two seasons Maes has coached the Youth A1 National Team and most recently the Select A1 National Team last year.
Â
"Throughout the years, the chance to coach with our USA national team and high performance programs has provided me insight and immersion to elite training methods," said Maes. "That experience and environment offers me an opportunity to continue my own development; plus, I get to surround myself with coaches and athletes who share the same passion I have for learning and competing."
Â
Maes is no stranger to the USAV High Performance, having coached the USA Girls' Junior National A2 Team to a gold medal at the 2007 European Global Challenge and 2006 High Performance Championships. In 2004-05, Maes served as an assistant coach for the Women's National Team that earned gold at the 2004 U.S. Open Championships and continued in that capacity coaching in the prestigious 2005 Montreux Volleymasters. He helped lead the Youth National team to a gold medal at the 1998 NORCECA Championships and continued coaching the squad at the 1999 World Championships in Madeira Island, Portugal.
Â
"Coaching at nearly every level of HP, his years of dedication helped shape the foundation of High Performance," said Heath Hoke, USAV Director of High Performance. "Lee consistently brings a level of excellence and professionalism to our HP athletes, elevating their game and success. His impact on HP can be tracked to the many players that have benefitted from his training."
Â
Training begun this past weekend and continues through Wednesday with competition running Thursday through Sunday. The event will be live streamed here.
