July 23, 2019 | Football
BOULDER—Juniors Mustafa Johnson and Nate Landman both added to their respective Watch Lists Tuesday with the release of the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, given to the nation's top defensive player. Â
Â
The duo are now on two similar watch lists as both were named to the Bednarik Watch List, also for the top defensive player in college football, announced last week. Landman was also named to the Butkus Award Watch List on Monday given to the nation's top linebacker. Â
Â
Johnson, a 6-foot-2, 290-pound defensive end from Turlock, Calif., started all 12 games last seaosn and led the Pac-12 in sacks a season ago with 8½. He had 18 total tackles for loss, the most by a CU player in the last 25 seasons and also led the Buffs with 16 quarterback pressures and added 10 third down stops. His 73 tackles was the most by a defensive lineman in Cu history in the past 21 seasons. Â
Â
Landman, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound inside linebacker from Danville, Calif., started all 12 games last season for CU and led the Buffs in tackles (13) and interceptions (two), while also recording four sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. He recorded seven games with double-digit tackle totals and four games with 13-plus tackles, and earned national defensive player of the week honors once (Nagurski Award) as well as Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week designation once. He was a midseason first-team All-American selection by Pro Football Focus, and a year-end second-team All-Pac-12 pick by the Associated Press and Phil Steele's College Football.Â
Â
The Buffs now have six players with nine watch list nods this month. C Tim Lynott (Rimington Award), QB Steven Montez (Maxwell Award, Davey O'Brien Award), WR Laviska Shenault Jr. (Biletnikoff Award, Maxwell Award) and OLB Davion Taylor (Butkus Award) are the others. Â
Â
The calendar for the remaining award watch lists as part of the National College Football Awards Association include: Lou Groza Award (July 24, top place kicker), Ray Guy Award (July 24, top punter), Paul Hornung Award (July 25, most versatile player), Wuerffel Trophy (July 25, community service and academic achievement) and the Walter Camp Award (July 26, top player).Â
