Tommy Named RMISA Women's Alpine Skier of the Year
April 01, 2020 | Skiing
DENVER—Mikaela Tommy was named the Women's Alpine Skier of the Year for the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association by a vote of its coaches, the league announced Tuesday. Â
Tommy, a senior from Wakefield, Quebec, finished her senior campaign with five race victories and nine podium appearances in the 10 races she finished on the season. Â She finished six of seven GS races on the season with five wins and one second place performance. Â In heartbreaking fashion, she didn't finish the GS race at the NCAA Championships, the first GS DNF of her career, a race she was favored to do well in, if not win. Â
Her five GS wins as a senior give her eight in her career. Â She is CU's women's alpine all-time leader in GS wins and has the top two single season marks. Â In two years, she moved into No. 2 for career wins in alpine, both GS and slalom. Â She won four consecutive GS races as in 2020 and three in 2019, the two best marks in CU history. Â
She was named the Women's Alpine MVP based on the regular season NCAA Qualification point totals. Â She was the top GS qualifier out of the RMISA for the NCAA Championships and No. 5 on the slalom list and the No. 2 overall seed. Â She was also the start list points leader for GS and fifth for slalom in the 2020 season. Â
She matched the CU record set by Lucie Zikova by winning eight runs during the season, as she took six GS runs and two slalom runs during the season. Â Along with teammate Stef Fleckenstein, the two became the third and fourth skiers and the fourth and fifth instances of women's alpine skiers winning multiple runs in both disciplines in a season.
