February 01, 2021 | General, Tennis, Track and Field
BOULDER- Sage Hurta (Indoor Track), Ian Gilmore (Indoor Track), and Sophia Derivan (Tennis) are the CU Athletes of the Week, presented by Arrow.
Â
Hurta broke the Colorado record in the Indoor Women's 800 Meters at the Arkansas Invitational in Fayetteville Ark., with a blazing time of 2:02.54 on Saturday. The time won her the meet and is the second fastest time for the event in the nation this season. Hurta broke Buffs' legend Dani Jones' record of 2:04.38 set last season.Â
Â
The race was Hurta's first indoor track meet for the Buffs since February of 2018 after missing time with an injury and a redshirt season. She wasted no time getting back to it, leading from start to finish, winning the race by three seconds, and putting herself on top of CU's record book.
Â
This is the fourth time Hurta has won the award in her CU career.Â
Â
Gilmore had a productive trip to Arkansas, competing in both the Men's 400 Meters and the Men's 4x400 Relay. He finished eighth in the 400 Meters and was the first Buff to cross the finish line with a time of 48.42. Gilmore was also part of a Colorado first place finish in the 4x400 Relay with a time of 3:16.27.
Gilmore joins Brenden Rice (Football) as the lone freshman to win CU Athlete of the Week in the 2020-2021 season. Â
Â
Derivan earned back-to-back Athlete of the Week honors after another perfect week, this time in Ames, Iowa against North Dakota and Iowa State. In doubles, Derivan teamed up with Sara Nayar in the No.1 matchup, beating North Dakota 6-1 and Iowa State 6-2. In singles play, Derivan won her No.2 matchups against North Dakota 6-4 and 6-0, and Iowa State 1-6, 6-4, 1-0.
