Numerous Buffs Awarded CU Athletes Of The Week, Presented By Arrow

February 22, 2021 | General

BOULDER- Leah Clayton (Volleyball), Stef Fleckenstein (Skiing), Filip Forejtek (Skiing), Eduardo Herrera (Cross Country), Canon Olkowski (Men's Golf), and Hannah Sharts (Soccer) are the CU Athletes of the Week, presented by Arrow.

Clayton was unstoppable on Friday night against No.10-ranked Washington in a five-set loss in her first game in Boulder for the Buffs. Clayton recorded 29 kills on an efficient .333 hitting percentage. The redshirt senior is just the 12th Buff to ever hit for 29 or more kills in a match. She is the third player in the modern rally scoring era to accomplish the feat, joining Taylor Simpson and Kerra Schroeder. Clayton also finished with a double-double, adding 14 digs.

Fleckenstein finished second and fourth in two races at the RMISA Championships, which doubles as the NCAA Western Regional. She was just .43 seconds from being an individual conference champion in the GS race. A day later, she was less than a second out of the lead in the slalom race. She locked up an NCAA qualification and a top-10 starting position for the GS race at the NCAA Championships. Fleckenstein was also named the Skier of the Meet for the RMISA.

This is the second time Fleckenstein has won the Athlete of the Week award as a Buff.

Forejtek finished sixth in the GS race and second in the slalom race in the same RMISA Championships. It's the second year in a row he's finished as the runner up at regionals in the slalom race.  He has now finished nine 10 races this year in the top-six, and has 15 straight top-six finishes, the longest streak for a men's alpine skier in 39 years.

This is the third time Forejtek has won the Athlete of the Week award in 2020-21.

Herrera finished in third place in the Men's 8K race at the Battle Born Challenge in Las Vegas, Nev. with a time of 22 minutes, 35.3 seconds. This is Herrera's second straight top-five finish to start the season. He split up a group of Northern Arizona runners who finished in first, second, and fourth.

Olkowski put himself on the top of CU's men's golf record book at The Prestige early in the week. Competing as an individual, Olkowski fired a three-round two-under at PGA West which is tied for the lowest score in relation to par by a Buff competing in their first collegiate tournament. He joins Sebastian Heisele and current Buff assistant coach Derek Tolan. Later in the week at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, he competed for the team score and posted a two-over in three rounds. That is tied for fourth in program history for best score in the first time competing for the team score.

Sharts recorded her second straight game-winning goal in a 1-0 win against Weber State. The junior put the Buffs on the board in the 44th minute, netting her second goal of the season. Sharts has scored in three games in her career and the Buffs are 3-0 in such occasions. She is also part of a defensive line that has posted three shutouts in three games to start the year. Sharts was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week last week.
