Forejtek Named RMISA Men's Alpine GS MVP

BOULDER – Junior Filip Forejtek was named the Men's Alpine MVP for the giant slalom discipline Thursday by the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association.

The award is given to the skier that accumulates the most NCAA Qualification points during the regular season, which consisted of four meets in the 2021 campaign.

Forejtek beat out Westminster's Mikkel Solbakken by just a single point, 134-133. In GS action, Forejtek had one second, two third and one fifth place finish in the four races while Solbakken had one second, one third and two fourths.

One "DNF" (did not finish) in slalom action prohibited Forejtek from competing for that award, as well. He picked up 105 points with one win, one third and one fourth place finish in the three races he did finish. The Griffins' Francesco Gori was named the slalom MVP with 133 points. If Forejtek would've finished that fourth race in the top five, he would've edged out Gori. He finished the first run of that race and was in fourth place before not finishing the second run. He came back from the DNF to win his first collegiate race that same afternoon.

On the season, Forejtek finished nine of 10 races including the RMISA Championships with all nine finishes in the top six, including six podium appearances and his first collegiate victory, winning the second men's slalom as part of the Colorado Invitational on Jan. 13. He is the No. 2 overall seed out of the RMISA for the NCAA Championships, earned first-team All-RMISA honors and is the top men's alpine skier when looking at combined seeding for the NCAA Championships. He's the No. 2 slalom and No. 3 GS seed for next week's NCAA Championship, meaning he will be in the random draw for a top 10 staring position in both races. He is only one of two skiers in the RMISA that will have that designation.

The RMISA began awarding league MVP honors in 2006, but this is the first season it has been broken down by discipline. Forejtek is 15th CU skier to win league MVP honors and the fourth men's alpine skier, joining Andreas Haug (2011), Ola Johansen (2016, '18), David Ketterer (2017). The most recent winner was last season when Mikaela Tommy won the women's alpine honor.

The NCAA Championships kick off Wednesday with giant slalom races at Cannon Mountain in New Hampshire. Thursday action shifts to Jackson Nordic Center with the 5/10K classic races. Friday's slalom races will finish off the alpine portion of the championship and Saturday's 15/20K freestyle races will close out the championship.

The Buffs have finished second in four of five meets this season.
