Grozier, Lisella Earn IWLCA All-Region Second Team Honors

May 19, 2021 | Lacrosse

BOULDER — University of Colorado seniors Sadie Grozier and Julia Lisella have been named to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association's (IWLCA) West/Midwest All-Region Second Team, which the IWLCA announced Wednesday.

This is Lisella's second all-region honor; she was selected to the first team in 2018, while it is Grozier's first all-region accolade.

Lisella was named the 2021 Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year and earned a spot on the All-Pac-12 First Team. She started and played in every minute of CU's 15 games this season and helped the Buffs advance to their third straight Pac-12 Tournament final where she was named to the Pac-12 All-Tournament Team. She averaged 10.07 saves per game and recorded a 47.9 save percentage, which are both 14th in the NCAA. She led the Buffs with 2.86 ground balls per game (27th in the NCAA) and her 10.89 goals-against average ranked 30th nationally. Lisella led the Pac-12 in goals-against average and saves percentage and was second in saves per game and total saves (151).

During seven games this season she recorded 10 or more saves; which included tying her career-high (17) against Arizona State on March 28. Lisella was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Buffs pick up wins against USC and ASU, April 2 and 4, respectively, at Kittredge Field to close out the home slate of the 2021 season. Lisella, along with the rest of the CU defense, held the Trojans scoreless for the final 25 minutes of play when the Buffs rallied from a five-goal deficit (11-6) and defeated USC 13-11. The two teams met again in the Pac-12 Tournament semifinals and she helped the Buffs once again rally to defeat the Trojans. CU was down 7-4 with 23:16 to play in the second half and came back to win 9-8. Lisella made 10 saves in the win.

Grozier was named to the All-Pac-12 First Team and the Pac-12 All-Tournament team earlier this season. She led the Buffs in points (52) and was second in goals (39) and assists (13).  Her 39 goals ranked fifth in the conference but she led the Pac-12 and was eighth in the NCAA in free position goals per game (1.36). Her free position percentage (0.500) was second in the conference behind teammate Charlie Rudy. She ranked third in the conference in shots per game (6.93) and was fifth in shots on goal per game (5.29). She played in 14 of 15 games and scored at least one point in each of those games played.

Grozier recorded a career-high six goals and seven points in the Pac-12 Tournament final against Stanford on May 8. Four of her six goals were free position goals, which tied the CU single-game record. She set a CU single-game record in shots taken earlier in the season against San Diego State (March 14) with 15. Grozier was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week after helping the Buffs record a pair of wins against USC (April 2) and Arizona State (April 4) to close out their home schedule at Kittredge Field. She recorded five goals against USC, tying a then-career-high, and had four goals in the following game against ASU.  Grozier also added an assist in each game.

Colorado completed the 2021 season with an 8-7 record to record a .533 win percentage. In eight seasons as a varsity program, the Buffs have never finished below .500.
