LeRoy Hands Out Team Awards At Annual Banquet

April 19, 2022 | Skiing

BOULDER—The Colorado Buffaloes Ski Team took part in it's end of season banquet Tuesday and coach Andy LeRoy handed out the team's annual awards as part of the process.

The Dick Schoenberger Award, annually given to the team's MVP, was awarded to Filip Forejtek.  Forejtek was named the National Men's Alpine Skier of the Year, won the Individual NCAA Championship in the GS race at the NCAA Championships, picked up two All-America honors, the RMISA Men's Giant Slalom MVP award and All-RMISA honors.  He won three races and was just the fourth men's alpine skier to win a race in both disciplines in the past 27 seasons.

The Buddy Werner Memorial Award is the team's second-oldest award and this season was awarded to Magnus Boee.  Boee picked up first-team All-America honors, All-RMISA and was second on the classic and freestyle lists for the NCAA Championships.  He won one race, a classic sprint race at the U.S. National Championships, and overall he had seven podium appearances and nine top five finishes in 12 finished races.

The Outstanding Alpine Woman award was given to freshman Magdalena Luczak.  Luczak won the individual NCAA Championship in the GS race at NCAAs and picked up first-team All-America honors along the way.  She won the race from bib 29, the lowest bib to earn victory at the championships.  After competing at the XXIV Winter Olympics, she skied in five races for the Buffs, hiking in two but finishing in the top seven in the other two races, including the win at the NCAA Championships.

The Outstanding Nordic Woman Award was also given to a freshman in Hanna Abrahamsson.  She capped a stellar season in which she finished in the top seven in all 11 races she competed, including a fifth in the classic race at NCAA Championships to pick up first-team All-America honors.  In the freestyle race, she finished seventh for second-team All-America honors.  She was first-team All-RMISA and had three podium appearances and nine top five finishes in her 11 races.

The Laura Sharpe Flood Award was presented to freshman Alexander Maurer.  The award is given for the best spirit, dedication and enthusiasm and is named after Flood, who died in a practice run in Eldora in 1990.

The Spencer Nelson Award, also known as the no guts, no glory award in the honor of Nelson, who died in a hiking accident in 2010, was awarded to Will Koch for the 2022 season.  Koch picked up second-team All-America honors at the NCAA Championships after winning a gold medal at the World Junior Championships.

The Lucie Hanusova Award, given to one who overcomes obstacles with a positive attitude, was given to Kaitlyn Harsch.  Hanusova died in a snowmobiling accident during the 2001 season.  Harsch overcame some medical issues early in the season to qualify for the NCAA Championships where she finished eighth in the slalom race to earn second-team All-America honors.

The Career Athletic Achievement Award was also given to Joey Young.  A super senior who came back for his fifth year, Young set a new standard by starting 60 races in his career.  He finished 49 of those 60 races and finished in the top 20 in 39 of the 49 outings.  He was also in the top 10 a total of 20 times with seven top five, three podium appearances and two race wins.  He skied in all but five possible races over the past five seasons.

The banquet also recognized the team's Olympians, Magdalena Luczak and Weronika Kaleta, as well as past Olympians Filip Forejtek, Magnus Boee and Andy LeRoy, as well as the Buffs who picked up RMISA and national awards throughout the season.
